Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!

I have been looking at registering a vintage plate for my 72 and wanted your opinion on a it.

In Oklahoma we can register a vintage tag (the kind that had the year stamped rather than the sticker) as our official vehicle plates.

I currently have a 1972 Farm Truck tag and am thinking of using it since the PO (my dad) used it on the farm, but the non-farm truck tags from that era are green and white... the same color scheme as my truck.

What are your thoughts? Please vote!

PS: These photos aren't of my actual vintage tags... just a reference...

Pretty cool tags....are the yearly tag rates any cheaper if you go this route? When I lived in Alabama I bought an 'antique vehicle' tag so I wouldnt have to buy a tag every year, it was good forever with no renewal. Well, in Alabama, forever apparently means one year as they repealed that tag deal 1 year after I bought mine, so had to buy tags on my old truck again.

Anyway, if you can use those tags and get cheaper rates (or at least not have to pay more), go for it :)

Nope. It's not any cheaper... in fact it costs a bit more, but it is just a look I'm after. I'm not a huge fan of our modern looking Oklahoma license plates (they aren't even stamped).

My real question is.... White and Black Farm Truck Tag or Green and White Tag on a Green and White Farm Truck?

What kind of truck is it? Street rod? stock? 4x4? I think it's more a question of what do YOU want. I think the green/white will look better, but the farm tags mean something to you personally, so that leads to the question of how much do they mean to you?

I think it would look good with a custom frame like this

unless the goal is to look like a farm truck, I'd go with the 'street' plate.

I vote for the farm truck License plate ,,because If you are as proud of your dad as i am of mine I'd do it for him ,,,,and when some one asks you about it ,,you can proudly say it was my dads .. Pretty easy answer for me and hope is for you also .. If it's the color ,,then do as the other poster suggested and surround it with something that will seperate the two different shades of green ,,if that is a problem for you ..

It is going to be restored to stock.

You outlined my struggle perfectly. The green and white will look better, but the farm tag means something. Which means more? That's a tough one, but I lean to Farm Tag. It is also nice considering I already have the farm plate I guess...

I would go with the farm plate because of your dad....

Re: Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!

This is a hard decision. My '67 stepper lived it's life in Oregon as a very well used farm truck. I think it would be cool to remember it's "roots" so to speak. I have vintage plates on mine, but AZ does not have farm tags.

I voted non-farm, but shoot, I think I agree with the masses, go for the farm tag out of respect for your pop. :)

Just make sure if you do use the farm tag that there are no mileage limitations that you have. IIRC in Missouri we used to have them however I could not find the statute.

When I lived in Georgia you could get an antique tag for an older vehicle . In SC it's a hobby tag and not for everday use . At least that's what I was told . Any of y'all know?

Washington State has similar restrictions on current farm tags. The truck can only be used for farm related work and has a mileage restriction. I think it is something like 25 miles from the home farm.

If you are able to run it as a "cool old and original to the truck plate" without restrictions go for it but make sure that there are no restrictions related to it except the normal "licensed as a vintage vehicle" restrictions. That usually means no hauling or work related towing.

I'm still up in the air on vintage and collector plates but will probably run the 48 with a Washington Collector plate as it is rear plate only and the truck won't be a daily driver when it is done although it may be driven often.

South Carolina's DMV site is pretty well done:

http://www.scdmvonline.com/DMVNew/de...facture_plates

Quote:

Beginning April, 2007 owners of certain motor vehicles thirty years old or older can apply to the Department to use a license plate issued by this State in the year corresponding to the model year of the vehicle. Upon approval, these “Year of Manufacture” plates will be used on the vehicle as a regular license plate. These plates can only be used on automobiles and light trucks with a GVW of 11,000 lbs. or less and an empty weight of 9,000 lbs. or less.

Year of Manufacture plates permit a vehicle that is at least 30 years old to travel on the roadways. These plates should not be confused with Antique Plates. Antique license plates can be used only on vehicles at least 25 years old; the vehicle is to be used only for club activities, exhibits, tours, parades and similar events, but not for general transportation.

To apply for use of a Year of Manufacture plate as a vehicle’s regular registration, the plate must meet prescribed criteria and the applicant must meet all the requirements as detailed in RG-505A Application for Year of Manufacture License Plate.

SCDMV does not sell or issue Year of Manufacture plates. Owners can purchase these plates through a commercial outlet; however, owners are responsible for ensuring that they understand and can meet all requirements before purchasing a plate. To view a historical list of SC license plates, click here.

Certain number sequences are not available for use as a Year of Manufacture plate. Other number sequences are available only on a limited basis. To view list of unavailable or limited availability plate sequences, click here. Applicants seeking to use a Year of Manufacture plate must first contact the SCDMV’s Personalized Plate Unit at (803) 896-9638 to determine whether a desired plate number is available BEFORE purchasing the plate. Once the plate number has been reserved with the Personalized Plate unit, the applicant is authorized to make application for the plate by mailing the following documents to S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles, Personalized Plate Unit P.O. Box 1498, Blythewood, S.C. 29016-0008. Tel. (803) 896-9638:

* Form RG-505a Application for Year of Manufacture License Plate
* Copy of paid property tax receipt
* A clear color copy or photograph of the plate to be registered
* Certification that the vehicle to which the plate is attached is insured
* Year of Manufacture special plate fee of $30.00
* Normal biennial vehicle registration fee (consult form RG-505a for fee schedule)
I have this one for my truck:

I agree with sjarrett71 and mr48chev... make sure there isn't any restrictions with the farms plates and run them. I prefer the color combo of the farm plate vs. the regular plate, but you'll probably want to drive a little farther than 25mi. :D

Another one for the Farm Tag. I think it just ties in well for the trucks history, and who cares about the plate color.

Oh yeah, I too think the Oklahoma is OK.....bit hokey.

I called the tax commission today and the said that it doesn't matter if the tag is stamped "Farm Truck" or not... it won't actually be registered as a "Farm Truck" but I can still use it as a "Vintage Tag" under Oklahoma law.

cedorris 03-03-2009 10:42 PM

Re: Vintage License Plate - VOTE!!

Oklahoma's Vintage Tag law allows any vehicle over 21 years to use any tag over 21 years... so if I wanted to I could put a 1935 plate on my 72.

Also, there is no restriction for towing, work, or mileage. It doesn't matter what you use the truck for... and the "Farm Truck" stamp doesn't matter either.

Here is a link to the info: http://www.tax.ok.gov/sp1.html

I voted Farm plates as that is our trucks heritage. A heritage that has become an ICON among trucks. But as has been said...it's your call.
