FI Suburban tank into 70 Blazer

This seems like the easiest way to add an in-tank fuel pump when doing my TBI engine swap. I searched the boards but didn't find any information on doing this. Have any of you done this in your truck? I was thinking about the tank from an 87-91 Suburban.

When I got my Blazer it had a tank from a Blazer/Sub already in it. However, I think it’s from an early 80's model, not an EFI set up. I believe the outside dimensions of my tank and what you are wanting are the same. Having said that, I like my tank and plan to keep it after I finish restoring my K5. It fits nicely between the frame rails and hold 30+ gallons. The PO added an additional cross member made out of heavy gauge angle iron for the front straps to attach to and drilled some additional holes in the rear cross member for the same reason. I will say this; you will definitely need to use the tank straps that came with the donor tank, not your original ones.

I happened to have a couple pics on this laptop showing the tank without a bumper on the blazer. It does hang down quite a bit so it probably wouldn't be best for rock crawling, but as far a looks, a factory bumper will basically hide it. Hope this helps you some.

Thanks Critter
Thats exactly what I was looking for. Looks like the tank can be turned around to use the stock LH filler. This should be an easy mod and beat using a frame mounted pump to feed the fuel injection.

Looking forward to see how this works... i am going to run a 5.3 and will need to run a high pressure pump out of tank but it would be awesome to have an in tank feed pump...

It will be sometime this summer before I have a chance to do this. I'll try to get some pictures and post some info. (Of course if it turns into a disaster no one will ever hear about it.:dohh:)

Why not just install an in-tank pump in your existing tank?

I looked into using a '90 fuel tank once but thought it to be a class 'b' fit personally, ended up going fuel cell.

Here's a good site for tanks etc, they sell the retro fit kit for installing an in tank pump into your tank.

I had seen that retrofit pump before. The deciding factor was a cost of about $400 for new tank (mine has a big dent in the bottom) and pump vs $45 for a nice used suburban tank and pump. With my budget I can live with a tank that's not quite correct for that price difference.

Yep, makes sense.

Sorry for going over-board with the suggestion's, you made no mention of budget in your first post so who's to know.

There was a thread its been a few years. It had some good pics and info The guy's name was MikeS I think. He went through the whole tank/pump issue with a TPI set up, VT might remember his name. I think VT gave him a hatch window when you did the Bill Athey blazer deal

What you want is an 87-91 26 gal blazer tank. It is 28"x27" and you can change out the TBI pump for a factory LT1 or Vortec pump. I have one in my LowBuck truck and I am in the process of doing one in my 72 4 door Tahoe right now. If you can not find the 87-91 go ahead and get the one from 80-86 Blazer 26 gal tank and the sending unit and be replaced with new 87-91 sender for about $100 or used from the pick n pull for ? The sending unit work perfect with the factory gauge as well.

The down side in stock form in the fill is on the pass side but can be cut off and re-welded to the drivers side. I would have the tank boiled out before doing this;) Also if you look into the Low Buck build you will see this tank looks 100% factory fit.
You can find info in these two threads about them. Their is more mounting info in the LowBuck post.

Thanks Kevin

That will help when the time comes to mount the tank.

Nice work on the Suburban.
