Congratulations Marv

I just saw the truck run on Pinks All Out and I have to say that is the best episode I have seen! Looked like the truck was launching nice and hard.

Hey thanks prairieboy. I have watched a number of times and am amazed how well the ol girl was hooking. Tucson is such a NICE track!!! The big stupid tires would make it seem like it should hook in a car wash, but with no weight back there,, it really does still have traction issues. I have sworn a couple of times it looked like the thing bounced the left front tire a smidge,, maybe enough to get a piece of paper under the tire (LOL) I sure wish they had some video from the front,, I'd love to see some hi-def video of what the suspension is really doing. There is not enough power there to do much, but it's fun. Here's one of my favorite pictures fo the truck.... Makes it 'look' fast ;)

Marv,

What's that thing weigh on the front axle? I'm thinking of changing my front spring since I am taking a ton of weight off the nose. My current ones might work killer for you. You around 2,050?

Don't have a front axle weight on this thing SUper,, truck is 3380 total on the tracks scales. It has springs out of the stock 74 1/2ton w/ 1/2 a coil cut off,,, stock sway bar, it's a street thing,, honestly

Yup 5on5", Convo-Pro's all around,, 15x7 with 225-70's on the front, and 15x15 on the rear with a Hoosier QTpro 33x22.50-15

I have a extra set of 15x8.5 Convo Pro's w/ 5on5 patern, center caps and another set of 15x15 street wheels with the 33x22.5 Quicktime (street tread, not the DOT slick) if your interested. :)

I watched it last night too for the first time. I was going to start a thread as well, but then I saw how long ago it was.
Still awesome job, way to represent! I think you are the first truck to win. Congrats!

I was pretty pumped after watching it. I hadn't seen it before and it was awesome to be able to root for someone, and then have him win the whole thing!

Ok.. Now I am wondering why mine is soooo heavy. If it weighed 3,850 with me in it with 1/2 tank, that means it would be about 3,700 with out me. I know you have a glass hood, but where else do you have weight out of it? I know my 4L80E is killing the weight, but the alum LS1 should be making up for some of that..

Re: Congratulations Marv

The backhalf project carried AT LEAST 200-300 pounds out the back gate. I cut the frame off 8" behind the cab and added ....
http://www.small-block-chevy.com/rearsusp.jpg
The trailing arms and stock frame is flat heavy. They made it like they wanted it to last back then.

Up front,,, my hood and fenders were trashed with rust. Ordered US Bodysource hood and fenders, but it's their 'street grade' stuff,, pretty heavy glass and not a lot of weight savings there. But I made my own aluminum inner fender panels, they only weigh a couple of pounds each ....
http://www.small-block-chevy.com/motor1.jpg
Obviously heat box is all gone,, only other lightening was to dump the old bench seat and add cheepie Slummit race buckets....
http://www.small-block-chevy.com/8_98f.jpg

Trans is a Hughes TH350 which is barely heavier than a glide... and you've seen the bed... all the wood is history and replaced with 0.065 aluminum except for the Alston tubs which are thinner (not sure how thick but the tubs are really light....
http://www.small-block-chevy.com/8_98e.jpg
Front bumper is steel, no rear bumper, 15 gallon cell in the rear. That's all why I said this thing is built VERY wrong.. most all the weight savings in off the rear and very little off the front (in comparison)... add those big stupid tires and you have aerodynamics of an apartment complex, enough rolling resistance for 3 vehicles

I shouldn't admit this, but.... in the staging lanes when they were running the quick8, they interviewed every racer and asked "what would you do if you won the $10k" I said buy new tires! Had been putting on big stupid smoke show at every burnout,, figured I'd get their attention somehow!!! So I won, ordered a new set of Hoosiers for the rear and they sit in the shop! Been sitting there for a year! I hurt something in the rear at that race. It's a nodular iron HRW case, Dyneer no-spin locker, Richmond gears,, bla bla all the good stuff. But after that race I have a random clicking in the rear ONLY while under very light throttle. The click goes away under decell, or acceleration, just under LIGHT cruise conditions there is a barely noticeable rythmetic clicking / clunking. Can't be a gear, not a 'constant rhythm,,, has to be something in the locker. So the truck hasn't moved more than 10 miles since that show in like Nov 07,, is that shameful or what! I have to get this stinking El Camino done so I can put the truck in the shop for some long overdue and well deserved attention!

I bet the truck is mad at you. She wins you 10k and you neglect her!

Re: Congratulations Marv

Marv,

Thanks for the info.. Like I mentioned, I know the 80e is killing me with weight. When I received it, it weighed 290lbs on a pallet with a stock verter. I haven't weighed it, but I'd guess it to be 250lbs with the smaller 11" verter.

It looks like the truck is 4-linked? I need to weigh my other gate. The one that is on it has about 100lbs added to it.

Full front on our truck is aprox 240lbs. Hood is 90 on my scale and the fenders, inner fenders, radiator support, front panel, grill and head lights was 150lbs. With the one piece glass front, that will shave a bit (has a glass bumper on it and it was off last time at the track).

My heater is long gone.

We are now running the same seats :)

Most my wood is out this time around. Thinking about just skining the top of the bed with a home made alum tonue cover. Might even make an alum tailgate.

Is your cage MS or CM?? I don't have a cage in it either yet.

I'm guessing that with out the cage, the truck will come in around 3,480 with me in it next time. I'm thinking about putting a 10 point CM in it and figure that might be 60ish pounds. So at 3,540 minus me that would be 3,340. Thats just a pinch shy of you. Wonder what it would weigh with a different trans and a new frame under it? Plus I have been thinking about a Mustang 2 front at some point.

Thanks for the input, keeps me thinking..
