Vin decifer
OK, here is how I see these two vehicles:
C: 2x2 S: 6Cyl 1: 1/2 ton 4 = Cab with chasis 0 = 1970 ? Z: Freemont Plant 114677 Serial Number AND THEN THERE IS THIS ONE: C: 2x2 E: 8cyl 2: 3/4ton 3 ????????? 4 ???????? - ???????? (something about New York, Pennsylvania?) 113558 Serial Number WHAT CAN YOU GUYS DO FROM THERE? |
Re: Vin decifer
ok i THINK that I have it:
04 = Stepside 34 = Fleetside SO THEY WHAT ONE DICTATES THE YEAR? AND WHAT ABOUT GMC/CHEVY? |
Re: Vin decifer
that first one the 4 means cab with bed, and the 0 means 1970.
is that second one a GMC.... it isn't decoding right. The VIN will not tell you stepside/fleetside on chevy trucks. The model number will, but not the VIN. |
Re: Vin decifer
I'm pretty sure that the second one is a GMC, not sure about the first one.

Re: Vin decifer
Andy,
What about that darn dash, never seen one before. What was it used for? |
Re: Vin decifer
thats one of the things that tells me it's a GMC
what year is the GMC? I'll look thought my stuff later and see if I can decode it |
Re: Vin decifer
The dash space is a state identifier if needed in certain styles of GMC vins for trucks that we destined to be sold in Pennsylvania. Hence if the truck was destined to be sold in the state of Pennsylvania there would be a T or K in the vin instead of the dash. You would also have a SPID RPO option number of Z55 for the T or Z74 for the Z to reflect the truck was made to the states requirements at that the time of manufacture.
If it is just a - (dash) in the vin at that location then it wasn't made to be initially sold in Pennsylvania. These typical dash style vins only appear in vins for GMC that use the 13 character long vin typically and in the years of 1970 and 1971 typically. GMC also used the 34 instead of 4 to identify a pickup box body style in there vins in some instances which made the vin longer, which messes with the online chev decoders answer. There are odd vins in a number of years in the GMC line. An example would a be a 67 GMC which could start with C9S basically meaning a conventional truck made in Canada with a 6 cylinder. The 9 identifed Canadian built in the Oshawa truck plant in Canada. GMC's were also built in some USA assembly plants also and most used the typical easily decodeable vin. On some GMC's you have a letter at the end of the vin A, B or C, which reflect GVW ratings. Hard to make a GMC decoder like a Chev one as GMC styles of vins vary in different years. I got them figured out though, this should help others wondering what's with the letters and dashes and numbers which seem extra in GMC vins. Rod |

C: 2x2 E: 8cyl 2: 3/4ton 34 box style body - no state identifier so it is left as a dash 1 this is your assembly plant, that being Oshawa Canada 1 this is your year identifier, in this style..a 1 means 1971. 3558 Serial Number....seems a number short Its a 71 GMC eight cyl, 3/4 ton, with a pick up box body. But I think also your missing a number here before the 3358. That vin sequence number seems to low and they were typically 5 characters long. Have disc brakes up front?...that would confirm 71. |
Re: Vin decifer
Rod,
That is the best info I have recieved on the vins for GMC, Andy thanks for your help too. GMC does in fact have fatory disc brakes. |
