eBay HEI opinions

Anybody ever bought one of these:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CHEVY...1%7C240%3A1318

Do you get what you pay for in Distributors? If I want a new one, should I just suck it up and go buy an MSD or ACCEL, or Proform, or...

Wel,, I decided to take my chances, be a Maverick, and go with this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Sbc-B...1%7C240%3A1318

It claims to be a ProComp, and I like the looks of the black cap better. We'll see when it get here. If its a 65K coil, too, I should be burning the tires off in no time...

One of my dads friends got one off ebay the 65000 volt blah lblah distributor and when he got it in and tried to fire it up he go nothing. The control module in it was bad out of the box. He spent another $50 on a good one and it fired off. I'd rather get and MSD than a "no name" brand.

I got one from the first link listed from gr8hotrods. It's a Procomp, had it for about 2 years with no problems. It's a nice piece for cheap.

For that cheap it's probably called "dumping". I gotta believe it's chinese made. I'd rather spend more and help someone right here in the grand USofA. Next thing you know we won't have anyone in this country building anything.

it sounds way too good to be true and the description os way off; not billet housing, standard hei cap(not crab cap)... the msd street fire hei is only $110

Re: eBay HEI opinions

Whoa, I thought the crab cap was the style that screws to the top of the cap. Also, didn't notice the non-billet shaft. I guess we'lll see what I get...

Crab style is the Vortec style cap. http://www.m-a-x-motorsports.com/ima..._rotor_kit.gif It's a v6 cap but its like the v8 cap minus 2.

Well, I sorta got what I paid for. Dizzy came in with a bad coil. According to the PN on the boxbox, it has 50,000 Volt coil and non-adjustable vacuum advance. Guess I'm in the market for one of those Skip White Accel knock-offs. I've left a VM for the seller, I'll keep you posted on whether he makes it right in the end.

Just to close the loop, the guy emailed me a return shipping label, then when the HEI got back to him, he refunded my purchase price, including the original shipping.

Appears to be a good seller/vendor who is stuck trying to unload a bunch of crap product.

As a vendor for those various Mfg's, they are all the same quality and all come from the same boat from China. It is the luck of the draw.

I bought a summit brand distributor i think for $90?. Its basically an msd distributor in a summit box. Had one now for two years in my truck no problems whatsoever.

Re: eBay HEI opinions

For what its worth, I went with the MSD Street Fighter Series HEI, and a set of Taylor Wires, just to be sure I had my bases covered. I will add something else, I have a BBC in my truck and focused on having nice parts on it. If your truck is more of a daily driver/not show truck kind of truck, A stock GM HEI unit and a new set of wires from AZ or Orielly's would do the trick. I burned out my MSD Box at the track once, and stabbed in a stock HEI unit and ran the same times in my Malibu as with the MSD Setup. So that made a believer out of me.....
