Gas Tank Relocation
I bought a 21 gal. fuel tank relocation kit for my 68 stepside. I'm having trouble finding out exactly where/howto mount the tank straps. Does anyone have any good pictures on how they did it? Any help would be great! Thanks

I'm not sure if you are refering to a Blazer gas tank conversion to truck, but here is a fuel cell pic if this is what you are installing.

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
Mine is the Suburban Tank with the straps going cross ways. It's the kit they sell LMC... I like the way you did yourrs. That's a clean look!

Thanks Mikey!

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
Workn on mine now. Just like slick's but the tank has to go in after the bed so I have to change a few things. With the tank and the roll pan in the way I couldn't get the bed bolts in.....

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
Hey Slick, How low does that cell hang down? Where'd ya get it?
Sorry Mikey, don't mean to hijack your thread. I hope someone can help with what you need. |
Re: Gas Tank Relocation
I put the LMC kit in my 68 short wide and didn't want to have a bed or quarter panel fill hole, and if I wanted the fuel filler to be over the frame, the tank would hit the bed, so I cut a hole in the left frame rail and put the filler through it and can fill it from under the wheel well. For a fill tube, I bought the Fuel tank Filler Installation kit part #CX1707 from Classic Indistries That is the part I like. The part I hate is that for the tank to fit under the bed I had to extend it down so low that it shows up too much when viewed from the rear.
Good luck with your installation. Charles |
Re: Gas Tank Relocation

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
I just bought the sumitt one. Very nice tank. Make sure you get the one with the sensor for fuel.
I will start a buid thread for my spring build up soon |
Re: Gas Tank Relocation
I have this tank too and Im planing on using it. I did some measuring today and be warned that the way this tank is mounted in the picture level to the frame lets the bottom hang down quite a bit more than I like about 7" below the botom of the frame rail. If you cut the cross sill and mount the tank up 3 more inches its a lot better, like 4 or 5 inches below it instead. Its a good fitting tank recessed.
the summit dimensions are 11", 25", and i think 17" (corrected) Quote:

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
Word of advise.... if your planing on installing a custom hidden hitch do your measuring first before installing either one!
Im going to be removing the cross section on the frame (short bed) and use the tow hitch double duty for the rear frame support and as a hitch. Im also going to raise the tank up almost flush with the bed floor (just leaving enough room for the sender) using custom cross beams that will also double as 2 cross sills. hope this helps. Ill post some pictures when I get started :) |
Re: Gas Tank Relocation
Its not! Its 11" thick from the top to the drop down fuel line fittings base, 9" is the measurement not including the drop down.

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
The 16 gallon tank is 25 X 17 X 9, sacrifice a little fuel for the fit, unfortunately.

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
T/A, you are correct, the sump is a little lower.
|
Re: Gas Tank Relocation
I was wrong about the other 2 measurements. I corrected those 25" and 17"

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
point is this is a great fitting tank if its raised up a bit.

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
Check out my build thread in my signature. It shows how I did my Blazer/Suburban 21 gal tank.

Re: Gas Tank Relocation
we'll call it the "'71 Pinto tank setup!" Just kidding. Whats the plan to raise it up some? You gonna do a trapdoor in the bed floor for filling tank? Would it be better to point the lines forward or did you face the rear because of the sump/acceleration flow? Nice looking. Did those straps come from Summit also?
|
Re: Gas Tank Relocation
dont know who your talking to but as far as my set up goes, yes a trap door is what Im aiming for. Im going to raise the tank up as far as I can get it to the floor of the bed. Im running the lines out the back, if you run them out the front you will be sucking air when accelerating. the straps come with the tank.

"Im running the lines out the back, if you run them out the front you will be sucking air when accelerating."
Can you explain this to me....I can't figure it out? |
Re: Gas Tank Relocation
When accelerating hard the fuel in the tank will be forced to the back. If your lines are coming out the front you run the risk of sucking air instead of gas. The summit tank is foam filled to reduce slush and purge but its the laws of physics that you are working against.
