Oil Pressure - new motor

Fresh rebuild, 0 miles. ran about 1 hr at fast idle. 1967 327 ci, over .030, Double hump heads, Melling High Volume Oil Pump, stock filter/pan.

Is 70 lbs oil pressure too much? Do I have a problem?

what weight oil and did it stay there even when it was warmed up ?? also did you pull the valve cover to see...I also suggest a mechanical guage for new motors unless you are positive the electric one is accurate

10w40, 70 degree day in TX. It dropped a little after warm, but never went below 65 lbs.

I would expect around 45 but at a high idle ( sounds like your breaking in the cam) that should be about right........

Re: Oil Pressure - new motor

my 383 sees 90 psi when cold (but then its Canada, so its pretty cold even in summertime)

but usually settles to about 50 psi while driving, and maybe 20 at idle.

i'd keep driving it, if its not knocking or burning oil.. i usually look at high oil pressure as a good thing.

I would pay attention to how the engine sounds. A brand new motor with real close tolerances can run some high pressure and its not a problem but much more higher and youll wash out the bearings. There is such a thing as too much lubrication.

I think the high volume oil pump is keeping it up there also.

Thanks folks.............I'm, gonna keep an eye on it..........Haven't got it on the road yet, but plan on running it again fast idle tonight or tomorrow. I've had em stay up around 50 before, just not 65-70.
