Wood Bed UV resistant
 

Last summer my son and I installed an oak wood bed in the back of the 68. We sanded it smooth and treated it with 2 coats of stain and 3 coats of UV resistant polyurthane.
Guess what. It was not so UV resistant.
We are about to start over with sanding and staining but I want feedback on what people have used to keep their wood floors glossy and looking new.

No polyurethane is good in the hot sun.The inside of the bed cooks.I prefer oils that don`t form a skin but seal the wood.The sun still leaches it out but you just brush more on.

I used Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane, but haven't had it out in the weather much.

Check the Mar-k website, they did some tests on various finishes, short version is that nothing holds up too well except paint. We need to redo our 68 also, I agree with special-k in that we used an oil finish, no film to come off, I think we used Penofin marine deck finish. Been 4 years but it needs redone too.

rich guys with wooden yachts maintain thier wood finish constantly to keep it looking good

Oiled, solid Teak should stand up well in the weather.....cypress may do well, too. Don't know what you'd treat the cypress with to make it comparable to the teak.

Try a marine supply. Best bet would be the Marine Stuff. Made to with stand salt water and sun. May have to do it every few years.

Buy a book titled "Brightwork - The Art of Finishing Wood" by Rebecca J. Wittman. It is an excellent history of wood finishing and techniques. It will tell you exactly how and what to use to get a long lasting durable and practical finish for wood that is exposed to the weather. I have done brightwork on yachts and love this book. It will tell you how to get the most incredible finish on your wood for a show truck quality finish.

Would you care to share what product was used and how much exposure it has had to sun and moisture? We always are interested in finding out how well our tests compare to real world experiences.

Also, Green Machine is exactly right. The test boards have been in the weather for 4 years 24-7 and the painted boards still look great and all the natural finishes have long since failed.

one thing to realize is the inside of a truck bed gets alot hotter than the ambient temp.It`s like heat pit.It can be 50% hotter inside there.When it comes to poly finishes I use helmsman and not too shy on the coats.You just have to stay on it.I use a tonneau cover.
