292 cylinder head mystery bolt

1 Attachment(s)
Hi All,

Does anyone know what goes in the bolt hole at the very rear of the cylinder head of a 292 (off a 1970, 3/4 ton). When I recently put the motor back in the truck, I thought it was for a bracket and left it alone (no bolt in it or anything). I have been trying to get my truck running and it started dumping some engine oil from the back of the value cover. I was wondering if it could have been coming from this bolt hole. In the attached pic, I put a bolt in it with some lock washers.

Thanks for any help.

Not sure on a 292 but IIRC that's where the oil pressure guage hooks up on my 250.

Thanks for the reply. The oil pressure gauge bolts in lower down on the block, passanger's side on the motor I have. The bolt in the back of the block is 3/8 or 7/16 in diameter so it is about the same size as the head bolts.

Could it be for a temperature bulb? My '69 292 doesn't have it, and I know the head bolts need to be sealed because they penetrate the waterjacket.

Thanks for the info. and the pic. I guess I will just leave the bolt in it for now. Good looking re-build on the 292. I see you put a clutch kit in. I got one for my truck from northern auto parts (disc, release bearing, pilot bushing, pressure plate, install tool) for about $80. It is a great place to buy re-build kits as well.

Santucci's "Chevy Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual" calls it a 3/8-16 UNC << Head Rear Accessory >> hole. Page 23.

Thanks for the information. Do you think engine oil could have come out of it since I didn't have a bolt in it?

Your 292 is incredible.

My 292 has a bracket there so you can yank the engine or head without having to climb in the truck and putting a bolt in there. I don't know if that bracket is original or left from a lazy installer.

That is a boss for an engine handling bracket. No oil can come out of it.
