Tilt Column
Over the last few weeks the tilt column in by '90 Blazer has become "sloppy". Is there anyway of tightening it back up? It seems to be originating from where the tilt mechanism is, are there bolts in there to adjust?
If it cant be fixed, then I'm gonna start hittin the yards for a new column...it's driving me crazy... Thanks for any advice.... |
Re: Tilt Column
Yes, you have to tear it down to the titl part and there should be 4 hex or star bolts that you can Lock-Tite and retighten.
Just make sure you know how you took it apart and take your time. GM tilt steering is an engineering marvel ;) |
Re: Tilt Column
I had to do one for a friend few times. The last time I removed the screws 1 at a time and used clear nail polish as a thread lock. That was 3 years ago and still no more slop...

Re: Tilt Column
Do an internet search on a "GM Tilt Steering Column rebuild" you will find several good sites. It will give you a teardown proceedure. I currently have one torndown as I am adding a new iggy switch lock and interval wipers new upper and lower bearings and repaint on the column case. You need to buy one special tool you will see in the write ups that is the horn plate spring retainer I bought one at Advance Auto for 15.00. They had one to loan but I like to have my own. If you get stuck send me an I.M. and I'll try to walk you through. Mine is to replace the straight one in the truck so I'm in no hurry to get it back together.

Re: Tilt Column
Here's one for a Jeep column. Pretty sure Jeep used a GM column back when real Jeeps were being made.
