Request for RECOMMENDATION on needed size of bottle jack
 

Due to a misunderstanding about the intent of my previous post, I am reposting this question.

My '72 Chevy C10 did not come with a jack for changing tires, etc. I intend to acquire from a store a new generic bottle jack to carry in the truck, to replace what originally came with my truck but is no longer with it.

What I am looking for is a recommendation on the size of bottle jack I need. I am not asking anyone to provide me a jack, and I am not asking where I could acquire an OEM jack. I would simply like to know, in the experience of people on this forum, how big of a bottle jack do I need? I'm primarily concerned about needed lift height, so that I can get a front or rear wheel off the ground to change a tire using the recommended jack points. My suspension is stock, with no fancy wheels or large tires.

let the air out of a tire and measure how much clearance you have on what you want to jackup thats the size you'll need in an emergancy flat tire situation

Sorry for duplicating your post. I wasn't expecting you would repost my initial request, so I started this new very carefully phrased post.

Are all newbies this much of a hassle, or am I uniquely annoying? :)

but then you might not get it high enough to clear the spare when inflated...


depends on your tire size, axle height from ground + 2" i'd say...

I have an original that I can measure if you want to know how high they go... Or just get one of those little one's from the store that has a corkscrew top..

I have a 1.5 ton bottle jack that works.It has the screw out part in the cylinder shaft that extends about 5".
Also, have you tried the factory screw jack from a 73/87 Chevy truck?
I have used the bottle jack on my 68,but not the screw jack.
Stupid truck had the original tires on it when I bought it and one had the audacity to go flat on me!Seems nothing lasts very long anymore!

I usually use a 1.5 ton bottle jack too. Plus a short 2 X 4 10-12 " for use in the mud seems thats wear I usually end up jacking stuff.

Just bought a new Bottle Jack for this very same reason, it's a 4T but very small fully extended the whole thing measures 13-1/2 inches. I think thats more than enough to get ground clearence on an inflated tire.

I bought a Suburban years ago and in it was a bumper jack that was hydraulic, it breaks down and works very well on these years of trucks. I believe it is period correct and was distributed by Hickey.

I'd recommend a 3 ton, b/c I like a little extra (in fact, that's what I have). The screw extension helps, and you can always throw in a sturdy block of wood if needed -- but never use a concrete or cinder block.

It seems like most of them would not have enough stroke to lift it high enough to get the spare on. I'm surprise some have had luck with these. The other problem I would see is that they aren't very stable with the small pad. In a parking lot it might be ok, but if you were on the side of the road it might be dangerous.

I have the little bottle jack that came with the truck. Not sure how low it can go, but it can lift high enough to get a 30" tire clear off the ground. Though I may need a new one, it's gear inside is skipping as I lift up.

Bottle jacks are rated by weight/tonnage.Just go by what the vehicle weighs and allow for loads.
Any jack will raise the vehicle enough to remove the tire/wheel.Set it on a wood block if it`s too short.

Just about any auto parts store, or Wally World, or Harbor Freight, or Sears, or....
