S-10 5 speed trans
has anyone put an s-10 5 speed in a 67-72 chevy truck? how id it turn out, any interference between the shifter and the seat?
Thanks- Eric |
Re: S-10 5 speed trans
Yep. Matter of fact I put two S10 five speeds in mine, about 6 months apart. They were behind a 350 and I drove it every day to work and back about 20 mi. round trip. I was 63 yrs old at the time - didn't try to burn the tires off every time I started off. My opinion is find an old cast iron Saginaw 4 speed. These 5 speeds won't take it. My experience.

Re: S-10 5 speed trans
Roland is right. That little s10 tranny isn't built to handle the torque of a V8 or the extra weight of the full size truck. (for very long) ;)

Re: S-10 5 speed trans
if you have a 250 inline, or a real lame 307, and don't hot rod it, then it'll be ok (ok-ish) The T-5 was never a real strong tranny on a good day.

Re: S-10 5 speed trans
World class T-5 Built right is a great 5 speed, what they put in S-10's are not. They cannot handle any amount of abuse, and putting it in a full size truck is abuse.

Re: S-10 5 speed trans
these trucks weigh just a tick more than the 4.3 liter S-10 trucks... 3500 - 4000 pounds. My ex wife's old 92 4.3 S-10 blazer was 4500 (although an automatic, but the 5 speed was avalible)

Re: S-10 5 speed trans
Not meaning to highjack but, what's the price comparison between a T-5 and a NV4500? If close the 4500 would be the way to go, it's a truck cast iron 5 speed.

Re: S-10 5 speed trans
My truck has eaten a Saginaw 3, and a 4 speed. I purchased a NP 833 3 speed overdrive that I am installing this weekend. I am hoping this will be my last tranny swap for a real long time! (I'm getting to know the bottom of my truck TOO well!)
The NP 833 was installed in GM trucks from 81 to 87, it has a 3.09:1 first gear and a 0.73 fourth (Errr Overdrive). It was designed to be behind some of the best Mopar muscle of the 60's. |

take a look at this
basically everything you ever wanted to know but were afraid to ask. |
Re: S-10 5 speed trans
So far all I see is talk about the T-5 and NV4500. I have the NV3500 and after a year its still fine. Much better than the T-5 but not as heavy duty as the NV4500. Also they are cheaper and plentiful. Easy install and the shifter is in the perfect spot.

Re: S-10 5 speed trans
How much do the Camaro T5s typically go for? My local yard has a 5 speed camaro sitting in there, been sorta thinking about it.
