Longhorn Cheyenne 30

Pretty cool Longhorn Cheyenne 30. Fairly loaded. How unusual would a one ton positraction axle be? It has the wrong buckets in it, but clearly is a factory bucket seat truck.
|
Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
I don't suppose it would be too unusual. The No-Spin is a Detroit Locker.
My guess would be 4.10 gears with a big block. Great truck though! |
Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
I WANT IT!!!!! That really does belong in my collection but I am sure I cannot convince the wife of that. She is still arguing against the motorhome...LOL!
I have 3/4 ton no-spin in my '68 Longhorn...same axle just heavier springs for the C30. All the big blocks Longhorns came standard with the 3.54 ratio unless you ordered something different. |
Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
I gotta tell you...that canopy is VERY RARE! I sold mine to castiron9 and it got hammered by a falling tree and now is toast. I have only seen two Longhorn canopies...yours is the second one!

Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
Cool a 3.54 gearset and a locker! I'm looking at a 133" WB and standard was 127, so the frame and bed were just 6 inches longer or were the longer behind the wheels as well. By the way stllookn, I have your 50th Anniversary Longhorn with the polished mags as part of my screensaver program.

Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
actually, I don't think the 3.54 gearset was avalible in the C/30... I'm pretty sure you could only get the eaton rear and the eaton gear sets, which would be 4.10, 4.56 5.something (5.13 i think maybe?)
If memory serves, the 4.10 was standard gearset with an automatic but only with single rear wheels. only 2450 one ton longhorns rolled off the assembly lines in 72. No records on engine/tranny/option packages though. That is a pretty well equipped one though, and while longhorns were more likely to be well equipped or even loaded than the typical 20 or 30 series truck, this one does still seem to be a step above the herd in nice options. An odd one in that combo is the buckets. The truck looks like it was bought for hauling a camper, and the trend was usually to be able to seat more than one passenger when going on a family outing. Then again, back then, the kids were able to ride in the camper. |
Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
Never doubt the LHM...LOL! I just checked my GM Restoration Guide and in 1968 the standard for the C30 Longhorn big block was 4.10. The other engine options were all 4.57. The C20 Longhorn had the Dana 3.54 as a big block standard. MY BAD!

Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
justcuz...that is an honor...I think I am gettin a little weepy here!:metal:
|
Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
This is confusing but there must have been a reason...LHM?
C20 power trains with 396 could only get a 3.54...nothing else offered! C30 power trains with 396 could only get a 4.10...nothing else offered! |
Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
mike, you've proven me wrong a few times... so it's all good. This is actually something some one else busted me out on a few months back.
Its all about passin on the info. |

Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
That needs to be given a new home and transformed to the glory it once had. Nice find.

Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
X2 - nice find.

Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
Would be interesting to see the GVW plate on door jam. Some single wheel C 30's accidently got 10,000 lb plates.
|
Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
Looks solid to me, A/C and a big block in a C30 Longhorn, nice option list, did you buy it ??
|
Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
I have not bought it yet. The guy that has it says he will sell it, but he has not come up with a price. If I do get it, how hard/expensive is it to get a good tool and stowage door. You can see from the pics that the entire door is missing.
|
Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
very expensive, and even then, hard to locate one worth owning.
|
Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
You might try do a search in the parts board. I'm pretty sure there was a very nice one not too long ago that didn't sell. nice truck, btw.

Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
I am getting the impression that the C30 had the HO 52/72 and the C20 had the Dana? I wonder if GM felt the HO was a stronger rear axle or what their reasoning was to install that in the C30's over a Dana 60. Also were there more Dana 60's in leaf sprung trucks than coils? I looked in the new book Differentials by Jim Allen and Randy Lyman (Randys Ring and Pinion) and it states available gearsets for the HO 52/72 are 3.90, 4.10, 4.57, 5.14, 5.43, and 6.17. Personally I have never seen a 3.90 gear set and since there was only a 5% difference in the ratio from 4.10 it was probably not popular back in the days of cheaper fuel. It also says the No-Spin (Detroit Locker) became available in 1962. Also the Load bolt was eliminated in the majority of these axles starting in 1962. They were still used just not on all rear axles. The comment that I thought was interesting is they state that the axle is not their first choice in a swapping situation, but a keeper in a truck with one already in it.

Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
C/20 had the HO52, C/30 had HO72.
In the C/20, you could get a dana 60, and most big block trucks automaticly got it. The Dana has very weak axle shaft, a slow spline count. The HO reas (eaton diff in a corperate rear) was/is a VERY tough unit that has stood the test of abuse and time. The part that blows about them is the lack of parts for them. The gears listed is acurate, but the 3.90 was only aftermarket, and has not been made in many years... basicly, a 4.10 is as high a gear you'll find for the HO rears. |
Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
The GVW range for the C 30 series was 6,600 (derated version) up to 14,000( heavy duty version). The heavy duty version(5 lug front 10 lug rear) used the heavy duty 11,000 rear axle, while the other lighter C 30's ( 8 lug front and rear )used the 7,200 lb rear axle. Most single wheel pickups had a 9,000 lb GVW, while most dual wheel trucks had the 10,000 GVW.

I have seen quite a few of the eaton rears with the load bolt after '62, so i don't know what the "majority" means to them, but I'm guessing they are full of it. Also, I'd like to know where you could have gotten a 5.43 or 6.17 gearset. This also sounds like more bs to me. I have a scanned page of a chevy service manual that shows a 5.83 gearset available, but that is another one I've never seen or heard of. The manual also lists the OEM ratios of 4.11, 4.57, and 5.14. Longhornman is right about the 3.90s, not GM. that is a cool truck, though. i'd be all over it. |
Re: Longhorn Cheyenne 30
The C 30 could be ordered with 2 different rear axles, the Ho 72 the 7,200 Lb axle and the Ho 23 the 11,000 lb axle. The heavy duty C -30 is comparable to the older C -40. The Ho 23 (11,000 Lb) was available with the 5.43 and 6.17 ratios. The Ho 72 (7,200) was available in 4.10, 4.57 and 5.14.
