new guy from san diego

So in a moment of weakness I bought a 1961 Apache longbed. No motor or trans but it is otherwise in great shape, minimal rust and minimal dents.

Not sure what my plans are for it but first thing is to get a motor in it so it's moble until I decide what I really want to do.

At this point I don't know enough to ask any intelligent questions but any thoughts are welcome. What are some common mods? What are some common mods to stay away from? Anything else?

After about 10 minutes of thinking about it I am tempted to get a 350 with a mated 700R transmission and call it good. But a lot depends on what I find at the local junkyards over the next few weeks.

Well since you dont have a motor or Tranny. Check out your body mounts. Check sheet metal bolts. make sure your not going to loose a fender at 60 mph when you get rolling. simple parts to replace since you dont have the motor and tranny weight. And then the axle could use a once over.

just a start and I know the guys here will give you alot of good advice.

Nice truck stock interior minus that after market radio.

On a side note: keep those old plates it makes these old trucks not having the crappy white ones added just takes the look away.

I know, what idiot would cut the dash to put in a crappy Kenwood stereo? At least they could have put in an 8-track.

thx

Well You have come to the right place to start. Take lots of pictures and welcome to the site. If you have issues finding parts I can look around up here. I might know a few "good ol' boys" that could have one in there yard up here.

Welcome from the high deserts of northeastern Ca.

Hard to tell a guy where to go on his own build, but here is a link to our photo thread. There are more cool trucks and great ideas in here than you'll know what to do with:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=107362

Our "project and builds" section has tons of great builds, and a lot of the folks are great at keeping photo journals of their progress. There is an infinite number of directions you can go, and the best thing you can do is take a look around and feel for yourself what it is you'd like to do.
