Rebuilding my sb400... Any suggestions?
Well guys we totally disasembled by sb400 down to the block.
We sent the block to the machine shop to get vatted and honed. The crank is getting sent to be vatted and polished. I am replacing the stock 350 heads with cast iron vortec heads and roller rockers with guide plates. (drilled for the 400 steam port of course). I have an edlebrock performer intake and a 600cfm edlebrock carb. (any suggestions for a replacement intake and carb setup? I was think about pickup up the airgap by edelbrock. Suggestions?) I will also be getting some headers as well possibly ceramic coated... I also want a new cam to replace the RV cam that is in it. I have true duels with 40 series flowmasters 350th trani being rebuilt as we speak. The sb400 block has already been bored 30 over and the everything is going to be sent off to be balanced. Well what do you guys think? Any suggestions? MSD to replace the hei perhaps? This is for a street rod that I can still drive everyday as well so keep that in mind I'm not building a dragster. haha! Let me know! Thanks Guys! |
Re: Rebuilding my sb400... Any suggestions?
Airgap is a good intake. The performer will do fine for what you are building also. It should not take much to make the 30 over 400 a strong engine. The vortec heads will flow good, but they will limit your cam lift height unless you get them machined. Sounds like your plans are for a cam that is not too radical so you should be OK. Use a cam that will have a RPM range of 1000 to 5500 and it will probably be what you want. Something like a 268 advertised duration, or maybe a tad larger with the bigger cubic inches. And all of this depends on the compression ratio you are going to have.
Most cams are advertised for 350 cubic inch motor, so the same cam in a 406ci motor will act smaller. You might want a 650cfm carb to help the new motor breath. |
