locking hood?
 

anyone have some good ideas on how to lock your hood so not just anyone can open it?

I been thinking the same thing. Had my battery stollen this last week, and I live in the woods????

Im going to be looking at an interior release from late model setup later. Just need to do alot before I get there.

Should be an easy fix. Some might now of a direct bolt up like say 90's or new gm truck?

you know when they steal your battery they wait until you buy a new one and come back to steal it.

As I have never done it but I remember my dad when I was a kid he would run a chain under the hood latch and down to the lower radiator support with a lock. I will have to ask him how he did it..

Don't laugh at me folks, but this here is about as pure, 100% redneck secuidy as you can get.
Can it be defeated? Oh heck yeah!
But let's face it most thieves are very lazy. If they wasn't, they'd have jobs!

I use a cable wire wrapped in a rubber coating and I have looped the ends using swedges. I run it through the top, under, in the hood holes that you normally would use to install hood ornament nuts. I grab the ends and shut the hood. Then I wrap the cables around what ever I can get them under and over, then I lock them together. The cable is 4 feet long. I am constantly changing up the variation with different routings of the cable and using more then one lock. This seems to be doing very well. I know nothing is fool proof, but it gives me a piece of mind knowing I have made it harder for them. I bought the materials at the hardware store. I use the hard to cut U-Haul locks on them as well.
I have made it my personal quest to make or invent ways to secure my two trucks and everything on them, because the stuff that is out there sucks, or it does not exist. I have even invented a locking devise to protect my gas cap and tube entry. Reference my avatar to see it. Next, I am inventing a undercarriage covering system to prevent access to cutting fuel lines. We work to hard for these inspiring meth heads to steal our stuff. Great Post!!!!

Cable lock wrapped around the core support, through hood and center support. Kept would be thieves out of my 'burb for years while I was in another state. It would be slightly impractical for a DD though.

I'm doing almost the same thing but mine is approximately 3' long in total so that it's harder to reach and see. I only lock it at night or in bad areas. I also use a disconnect on my battery before locking the hood...in the 'hood.

When I got my truck the previous owner had a little cab and a tiny master lock on it. I don't remember how it was run though.

If you look in the FAQ's, there's a write up that eliminates the external hood release and moves it to the inside like the new trucks.

Yea, that was hard to swallow when I got hit after leaving the security of the Navy base. I am glad some else is doing this too.

Mine isn't 100 % secure but I doubt if too many thieves would look in the wheel well to open the hood especially in the dark

Not saying a cable is the wrong way to lock your hood, but how fast can you get the cable off? Like as in what if your engine started on fire? It was just a thought I had while reading this thread, and I thought I would just throw it out there incase some of you didn't think of it. I would hate to see a thread about someone's truck being burned to the ground.

A cable doesn't really add much security at all even though its a cool idea.
something els needs to be fabricated for better security. Let me see what I can think up.
Im sure something can be designed.

This was supposed to be temporary when I put the billet grill in and would have to lay on the ground and open the hood with a stick. I took an old throttle cable I had and installed a Piece of metal to trip the stock lever. I screwed a plate on the bottom of the radiator support so you can't reach up and trip it. Eventually I want to put it in the cab like putter did.

I was thinking the same thing. terrible thought, but I'd rather be prepared. I don't think a separate lock is a good idea, could potentially take too long to try to get it open. and if there is a fire, you might not be able to reach and unlock the thing without getting burned.
same with locking hood pins, they are not legal by most racing regs because of the safety issues.

I see the point, but when the truck is just sitting there parked it wouldn't matter anyways. the point is to stop or slow down some punk as kids trying to get your battery or whatever.
