Gauge Troubleshooting
 

Put an untested deluxe gauge set in an existing deluxe gauge truck. The untested cluster includes a tach. First the tach doesn't work or doesn't appear to, one lead to negative side of coil, second to fuse box for 12V. Do not know if the tach ever did work. Any bench tests known by anyone? ? I ran the 12v to the fuse box and piggybacked the panel lights to it. Also, the temp gauge will go full scale, with key on. Previous it read correctly. Any thoughts? Used to be ground would be ? full scale ? or zero?, and open would be the opposite. And last, the wire(black) that runs down the column with a light socket on it, goes to the upper right side of the gas gauge, correct or if not where? Majot league brain fade. Thanks for the assist. Obviously the tach dash looks great, but it would be better if it worked as well.

I don't understand the piggyback for the lights. If it is a factory tach you shouldn't have a light in it, it should use the lights in the cluster. It sounds as if you don't have it grounded right either. My 71 has a small ground connected to the back of the cluster on the speedodomter side down at the bottom of it on the back side. I would check the grounds really good they can cause all kinds of pains.

it also sounds like a ground problem to me, that's the place i usually check after i find out if i have power to the item in question. the most overlooked porotion of an electrical circuit is the ground.

If your old dash panel didn't have a tach in in it,I think you have to have the wiring harness for the tach dash.

Not sure on the tach problem, but when I recently put the gauge dash back in my 68 stepside, it wasn't grounded well, and when I turned the lights on, hit the brakes, turned on the signals, etc, the temp and fuel gauges would go nuts. I installed a ground on the back of the cluster, to the dash, and haven't had any problems since.
