Removing 1970 Blazer Top
 

Okay, I sure this has been covered many many times here... But, I am new here. I just picked up a pretty nice 1970 Blazer in NV from the original owner.

He never had the top off, I want to take it off to start getting to work on it and things...

Anyone have advice and how much does that top weigh, and should I store it in a specific way?

Great looking truck. You may have better luck in the Forum for those. See if you can get a Mod to move it over there. Or search it at the top of the page. Here is the link for the 67-72 Suburban/Blazer forum.

I agree, you'll get a better response there. I'll move it for you. Nice Blazer! It's a lot like mine, but yours is in better shape.

I hang my top from the garage (similar to what they did here http://home.pacbell.net/jls-dls/RemoveTop.html), but with a friend or two you can easily lift the top off. They weigh roughly 300 pounds.

Just a quick note, if you're body mounts need replacing, do it before you pop the top off for the first time. I wish I had taken the time to replace them before I pulled my top for the first time. Old body mounts will cause the body to sag and make it difficult to align the top properly and get a good seal.

You'll probably want to get new seals on the top before you put it back on again too.

Welcome to the board - is that K5 in as good of shape as it looks? Definitely do the rubber body mounts before you go topless!

Yea, what they said about the body mounts is very important. The first time I took my top off, I didn't know that. Took it "wheeling" and the doors kept popping open. Dont think I did any damage, as the top went right back on easily. But I'm changing all the mounts and repairing the rocker boxes before it comes off again. Nice looking K5 you got there!

Thanks for making me feel very welcome, that cool to know I am not just a "rookie" and alone on this "project"!! I took it to a local friend who owns two shops, he said the body mounts up top are shot... Sounds like I should replace those first?

Other than that I had to replace the top hose and the truck is pretty sweet! I feel like I got a pretty good rig!

Glad you discovered the body mounts. I've heard they can be done in a weekend, but i haven't tackled the project yet.

I'm avoiding the inevitable as well. I know that a 4x4 shop should know how to do them. I dread the task. I was planing on removing my top until I read this post.:smoke:

I just removed body mounts this weekend and depending on the deterioration of the originals they should be able to be done in an after noon. All you need is a high lift and a couple tools. the high lift is the key they make it super simple... just take off a couple mount bolts then lift place pucks place washer place bushing place mount place washer lower replace bolts. rinse and repeat

I just recently took my top off for the first time too... the corners of the windshield frame have a few rust spots. gonna see what i cant do about that.

The Blazer I picked up is also a project for me and my 13 year old son... Maybe you guys can start a club, since were neighbors and all :metal:

Bringing up this thread again. I have a question on the body mount kit from LMC; did you buy the complete kit or just the body mount kit? How is the quality of it? Is this the best route for a 70 Blazer that will mostly be street driven? I like that it is a "complete kit", but worry about how long they will last compared to poly ones. I am going to have it done along with my rockers at a shop, so I want it to last as long as possible.

Anyone ever use the Energy Suspension kit (34110-G) ? Opinions or comparison to original rubber mounts and what is it lacking compared to the 84 piece kit that LMC offers? http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Jacking the thread here, but here I go anyway. I bought my poly body mount kit from Jim Carter Classic Truck Parts. Nice kit, but no bolts. LMC has a nice detailed diagram picture, and that's where I got all the bolts. I haven't installed them yet, so can't give any more info! You snapped any more pic's?

Here is where we are so far... Cleaned out the inside, all new front end and rear bumper, the paint buffed out real nice! Body mounts are getting done right now, so the top will be off before the weekend.

Coming up:
Wheels and tires (think I am going with Chevy rally wheels)
new steering wheel
Shocks
pull the roll bar strip it and paint it
Stereo

Then enjoy

Kind of a lower optioned blazer with utility buckets, no rear seat and the inside spare, way to sweet!! Love the originality of the rig, keep it that way and the white spokes set off the white top against the red, but it is your's swap as you will, I just think she is purdy sweet the way she sits!!

I have a rear seat, it's in the garage for now... Until I firgure how I want to "do the seat.
