73gmc - won't start

Re: 73gmc - won't start
Use a timing light to determine if you actually have spark. Are you sure all wires are going to the correct terminals? points or hei distributor? If hei and no spark, the module inside the dist has a tendency to die suddenly. If wires are routed correctly, and there is spark, add a touch of fuel down carb and see if it fires.

Mitch, have hei and all the wires are correct. The module inside the dist is 6 yrs old. How can u use a timing light to determine the spark? thanks

Re: 73gmc - won't start
Connect your timing light, one at a time, to each plug wire, and crank the engine. The light will flash if there is spark to the plug.
I have had modules last over 10 years, and others crapped out after only a couple months. I helped a buddy with his truck that had no spark. He drove it fine one day, then it would not start the next day. Bad module. I think Auto Zone, or the other parts stores can test them, but I'm not positive. |
Re: 73gmc - won't start
#1 check you have 12 v power at the dizzy then check fire at the button inside the cap below the coil with the cap off and hot wire connected to the cap (will have to have someone else turn the engine over while you hold a tester to the button) If you have fire there test at #1 plug by taking it out and putting the wire on it and holding it next to a ground source (usually the frame) hold onto the boot, not the plug. If the plug sparks all of them are firing and you have a fuel issue.
