Need transmission help
 

Have any of you ever had a problem with your auto trans linkage coming off. I have a th400 and the dang thing keeps coming off. The piece that rides on the shaft which is attached to frame keeps sliding off of the shaft. I unbolted the shaft bracket that attaches to frame and put some spacers behind the bracket thinking this would keep the other piece, which is attached to rod coming from steering column, from slipping off the end. No luck though. Has anyone else had this problem? I know this post is confusing but I don't have any pics. Thanks

Look to see if your engine and tranny are mounted straight. It sounds to me like they are sittig a little crooked...like the front of the engine to the left, and the tail of the tranny to the right.
That's how the dope smokin old man installed mine. He actually welded the piece that turns the tranny 'finger', and made it a little longer.

Is it possible that the transmission mounts are wore or something. Because after I put the linkage together I try playing with it to see how it is coming loose but there is no way to get it loose. Then it ends up coming loose while driving. This last time the linkage got wedged between the trans and the shaft piece that attaches to frame. I had to pry trans over to get the linkage loose. Maybe trans is moving while I am driving, which allows linkage to come loose? I don't know, but it is real annoying. Thanks for any info you have.

You do have the cotter pin in the shift shaft at the transmission end of it, right?

69 C-10 Fleetside, mild 383, Dart Iron Eagle heads, Crane Energizer 266 cam and 1.6 roller rockers, Edelbrock Performer manifold and 600cfm carb, HEI w/ MSD components, 1986 front spindles/disc brakes, Vintage Air in-dash.

Double check your engine mounts and trans mount. If you have a bad engine mount it will cause the engine to raise up and over which would allow the linkage to slip out of the mounting hole. The Trans mount will have the same effect.
