manual steering adjustment

I have quite a bit of free play in my steering. I guess they are adjustable. Is that something I can do with no shop & basic tools?

On the top of the gearbox there is a 5/8's locking nut with a little shaft coming threw it with a slot for a flathead screw drive. You can loosen the locking nut and tighten the shaft clock wise. Make sure the wheels are straight when you do this. I would only go a half turn at a time. If it is too tight, the steering wheel will not return properly after you make a turn. I have been told never to adjust so that the little shaft is lower than the locking nut. Oh, and make sure you tighten the locking nut back up http://67-72chevytrucks.com/board/ubbhtml/wink.gif

Some of them have an allen bolt instead of the slot.
A slightly better way to do it, is to have an assistant (wife, neighbor kid) turn the wheel back and forth in the free play area while you are tightening it.
You will most likely not get all the slop out of it. HTe manual gear box is a known sloppy item.
