Anyone running a rear sway bar????
I'm curious as to experiences with rear sway bars. Is it worth it? I know on these trucks the front is the main concern though.
Thanks.... |
I have one on my 69 from Classic Perf. products. It works great. My truck didn't have any on it when I got it and I added the front and it made a world of difference. I don't know how anybody can drive without one. Then I added the rear one and it just stays flat on a hard turn.

I'm thinking about putting one on my 72. From what I've heard here, I think its a good idea.

My experience with rear antisway bars ,is all positive you will definetly notice improvement in handling and cornering .The ride may stiffen up a little , if i can remember the further from the pumpkin you mount the U bolts the stiffer the ride moving then closer to the center softens the ride a bit.
You will also notice less tuck and roll on acceleration and braking. I've always used Hellwig but wasn't happy with there quality control on the last bar I installed for a Toyota Tundra . I would try Classic Perf ,Mixup recommended. I currently don't have any on my truck now, and was looking at them on Classic Performance. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to install both front and rear. Is the rear bar harder to mount than the front??? Thanks again guys.
|
If it was me I would install the front one first ,you can get one at a junk yard just get new bushings ,stock one's cost about 10. Poly one will be more.
Easy to install. The rear will take a little longer ,you will have to mount everything loose and then line it up and start torking things. I think I saw a post on here not long ago about the rear stabilizers and a few people were complaining that they were having problems installing them. One board member said the directions were not very accurate and you had to redrill some of the holes to get things lined up. I personally think it's a great idea. I hope some more board members can shed some light on this. I would love to have one on the rear to compliment the one on the front.

my experience...the rear bar I purchased from Brothers about 2 years ago has been a real headache. They don't make their own but rather sell someone else's bar. The first thing I had a problem with was the bracket that holds the bar to the trailing arms. The bar intersect the arms at an angle but the brackets aren't long enough to span the joint in the arms so that you can drill the holes for attaching it to the arms. The other problem is with the end link bolts. The ones supplied are 11 inches long and when they are mounted on a truck that is lowered 4 inches in the rear there is only about 2 1/2 inches of ground clearance. When I checked out the ADDCO web site I found that their end links are approx. 8 inches for our trucks. I'm now trying to find a dealer or way to get answers from ADDCO so that I can get my bar mounted.

One note:
Before you install a rear sway bar you will need a heavier than stock front bar. Otherwise the truck will push. Its much easier to handle a loose condition than a tight one http://67-72chevytrucks.com/board/ubbhtml/wink.gif |
I had an Addco rear bar, but I didn't like the way it said to mount it so I never did put it on. I came across a bar off a 89 Camaro, after about a week of twisting and turning, i finally figured a way to put it on the truck and it looks like something the factory would have put on it. I made a webpage on how I put it on my truck, but webshots.com won't let you link pictures anymore so I have to redo that page, along with the rest of my site, but I will repost it once I get it fixed.

I'm just going to wait on the rear one, and maybe try and do a camaro one or something. After that one-piece glass, I don't need anymore headaches!! The front is where all the weight is anyway.

Your steering response will be much better, and the truck will corner flatter, with zero reduction in ride comfort. A properly installed stabilizer bar will not affect your straight line ride quality. I got mine from Brothers when they had a killer sale -- $89 + $22 shipping. The box said Hellwig, but there was an Addco part number on it. (Maybe Brothers buys from Hellwig who buys from Addco.) Anyway, the end links were too short, even for my 3" rear drop, so I bought some 11" links directly from Addco. The bar instructions suck, but you can figure it out. Just remember to mount the bar as close to the axle as possible and keep it parallel to the ground for max roll resistance. You can do this by jacking up the truck using the rear diff as the jack point. By the way, I have a coil spring rear suspension.

I used a hellwig on the back of mine. It was one that clamps on. It worked allright until one of the clamps fell off when I was driving. I must of had the stereo cranked up, cause I didn't hear it fall off. I wouldn't recomend that brand, but would definately recomend getting a sway bar. It helps a lot.

I have the clamp on from hellwig, easy install, has never fallen off,but I torqued the h#ll out of it. I put both front and rear on at same time, hahd to do over I might have done front first, but I am happy with it
