Re: Day at the Junkyard, Sunburn and some pics
Man you guys have some cool stuff still in junkyards, you're hard pushed over here to find any with anything much older than early 90's here now largely thanks to changes in the rules meaning that all yards now have to be concrete with the right facilities to break cars draining off the fluids, a/c gas etc in a safe and environmentally responsible way, most of the great old yards have now shut down as a result leaving it to specialist breakers who aren't interested in selling you anything other than major parts.

Re: Day at the Junkyard, Sunburn and some pics
That hood ornament is awesome,:metal: What is that on?
|
Re: Day at the Junkyard, Sunburn and some pics
I lived in Amarillo for about a year and a half and never saw that yard!! Care to disclose it's location, I am in AZ BTW so my chances of getting there are slim and none, but ya never know!!
Hood ornament, I'd guess pontiac, didn't they have some racially sterotyped (I live on the REZ and my wife is Native, so yeah anything like redman chew, redskins FT team, etc, kinda not cool) line called a CHIEF or something like that. |

I dont think Pontiac meant it like that, nor the chew you mentioned or the football team. The car especially was prolly more of a monument or tribute, definintly not poking fun. |

Second, I'd like you to look at the ornament, what stereotypical "INDIAN" features do you see, I see the nose, and few others, and all you need to do is look at a dime store Cigar Chief to "get" what I mean. BTW None of the tribes of the southwest have had "Chiefs" for quite some time, the Cavalry saw to that ask Crazy Horse, Geronimo, Chief Manuelito, etc, so it is kinda touchy. I am not some bleeding heart, but you look through our "HIS"tory and the Anglo/Europeans have done a lot of stuff to a lot of Minority groups out of stereotyping. How about the Cartoons that show African Americans in a stereotypical manner, no biggie unless you happen to be the one being stereotyped. Completely off topic, sorry OP, cool picts just got touchy with the ornament, oh and if it was a tribute, then why doesn't Pontiac or for that matter any of the other manufactures use stereotyped names and charactures today to pay "tribute" to the "Indians"? |
Re: Day at the Junkyard, Sunburn and some pics
Great job on the pictures.
There was a Star Chief.I think the fact that Pontiac,MI was named for the great Chief Pontiac and the carmaker took the name of that town is how the Native American theme got tied in.I think the company held him as noble by making him thier icon. What`s in a name? When it came time for a name for their muscle car they named it goat. |
Re: Day at the Junkyard, Sunburn and some pics
