Blazer gas cap ?

I have a gas cap from my in cab truck tank. I have a gas fill assembly from a 72 blazer. The cap won't fit. The hole in the filler tube is too small for the cap to fit into it. It is possible that the cap is from another truck, but it did fit mine just fine.

LMC shows only one cap part number for both. What's wrong here? I'm going to find another truck gas cap and try it, but does anyone know if there's a difference?

I believe 72' was differant than previous years?

there are 2 different styles . one has shorter locking "ears"

I bought a new stainless cap at the parts store for like $8 and yes 72 was different than previous years
