72 205 tc leak

I know what all of you r thinkin...they all leak. Well, when it was new I am sure it did not. (It is a 72 half ton 4x4 short bed.) So I rebuilt (or I had it rebuilt) with new bearings and seals etc. All the gears looked good so that is all that was done. Heck, the bearings all looked brand new, but the kit was already there so...
hooked up the speedo and went for a spin and there is a leak at the speedo cable, big surprise. Did research on this site and changed the sleeve that threads into the case and took it into get stereo and when I got there, guess what, yep still leaking. the case is not overfull nor is there trans fluid in the case.
The only thing I haven't looked well at is the gear itself to see if it has a groove or wear on its shaft or something like that because the sleeve is new and has the seal inside which should "seal".
What am I overlooking? Help me please!

Seal the right way round? Mine was U shaped. Legs of the U should point in?? Maybe.

it came already installed in the sleeve. I never took it out, I didn't know that it could be removed??

OK, well mine was worn and I replaced it. Square cornered U shape seal deal. Your's might be totally different though.

I had this same issue. If you have not solved this yet, I got a speedo gear retainer from a local driveline supply and it has a O-ring groove. I am putting it in today, we will see if it works. It appears to use a #110 o-ring.

Is it possible the seal dried out or was dried out when you got your replacement part? Mine was leaking and I put the same part you listed in from the dealer and it had the seal in it, I lubed the speedo tail a little so it wasnt a dry fit and tightened her up. I did have to go pretty tight on the speedo cable nut. I fixed all my leaks before I tore my truck apart for the rebuild so I didnt have to be P.O.'d afterrward from drips under a sweet looking truck. Mine is still good, but I just got her back together so it will prob start leaking again now that it drives. How's Pismo, I went to AG and have had many dune crushing old chev's, in the early 90's there were a few of us from up and down the coast running some sweet rides with big motors. I have done the ag and pismo car shows.

My stock retainer did not have a seal groove. It looks like it was just a machine fit and probably got sloppy. I got a later one and it has an o-ring groove.
