My nitrous install story

Well, got the plate system on my truck last month and gave it a try on the street and found that I had a fuel psi problem as I installed a low pressure cutout set at 5 psi (lerned that lesson with nitrous a long time ago) anyway I thuoght that mabe the 3/8 inch feed line in the tank was to restrictive so I pulled it out and put a 1/2 inch line in place of the 3/8 on the sending unit. I go for a test ride same thing. So I hook up a fuel gauge to see whats going on and find out that my fuel press is at around 5psi till I stomp the throttle then it goes down to 2psi . So Im driving back to the house wondering what the heck is going on and thinking that mabe the holley 110gph pump I (THOUGHT) I installed was going bad. Got home opened the hood and to my suprise no holley pump, just the stock pump. Now I knew I bought the pump so after looking around I found it and installed it. I still have no idea why I didnt put the pump in when I did the motor 2 years ago,any way problems gone . 8psi at idle or wide open and with nos. I have made about 7 passes with the timing way back and incresing a little at a time checking plugs. Last night it went 12.39 @ 111.33 mph plugs look great.

what kind of engine set up do you have

Re: My nitrous install story

It's the original 402 .030 over TRW forged pistons basicly the 375hp 396 piston ,comp ratio around 10.8,The rods resized and arp bolts ,The heads have some port matching and valve area work, Traded the cast crank and some $ for a steel 427 unit, I went with a comp cams hyd roller .566 lift 270 duration 215@.050 I bought the k-kit witch comes with cam, lifters, springs, locks, retainers, pushrods, timimg chain and gear. I would say this is where you get the most bang for your buck .I also got the pro magnum roller rockers . they don't fit under the factory valve covers but they do make a spacer to raise them .edelbrock rpm intake,750 holley mec sec carb. MSD dizzy & 6AL box ,timing 35 total. 12inch converter witch is supose to stall 2000 BUT DOES NOT, in the th400. New eaton posi unit 3.73 gears , p275/60 mt dragradial..If you were to paint the intake ,use the spacer under the factory valve cover,do some minor fab work on the a/c bracket. The motor would look stock. If I missed anything or you have any other questions.feel free to ask..Frank

Interesting. I always thought it was a no-no to run a nitrous system off the engine's mechanical pump. You don't get any pulsing on the fuel pressure when the nitrous solenoids opens? Do you have a fuel pressure regulator or run both the carb and the nitrous straight off the mechanical pump? What plate system are you using and what size pills you got in it?

I have a Nitrous Express kit to put on my 454. Hope to get it done later this summer. I was planning on using a second dedicated electric fuel pump and regulator just for the nitrous system. The instructions say the fuel pressure for the nitrous system should be at 9 psi for safe operation. And I thought Holley carbs only like around 6 psi or so. Not sure how else to set this up without at least having two regulators. Am I missing something?

Re: My nitrous install story

The mechanical pump is a holley 110gph .At idle its pulsing from 4psi to 8psi .Off idle and up it goes to 8psi and stays there. at 5800 rpm with the nos it seems to drift down to 7psi. And the motor and nos are fed off of the same 3/8 feed line from the pump. My 750cfm holley carb seems to be fine at 8psi. My system is a nos cheater kit with 73nos jet/ 82 fuel jet . I have 110 octane in it and the timing is at 31 deg total. Bottle press is between 900/1000psi .The best way to set up your fuel system (I think) would be to have the fuel for the nos to be by itself, that would mean its own tank fuel pump reg ect. But I'm cheap and I don't plan on running any more than 180hp of nos.
