5-speed
new to chevys. bought my son a 66 chevy want to build it up what 5-speed will fit a 350 motor? ive heard t-5 will same thin a mustang got right? just difrent bell housing?

you have to use the one from the camaro
they dont hold up that well either the ones from a mustang you have to get a special bell housing (i think lakewood sells one for $280) then you have to machine the shaft that fits into the pilot bearing it would be much easier to find one from a maro and use it |

i'm running a 84 none world class t-5, It's hooked to a stock bellhousing with a 11 inch clutch from a 79 chevy c-10 with a 400. that clutch is the only 26 spline 11 inch Icould find in the book. I run a mix of 60weight motor oil and 80-90w gear oil about 6o/40 more gear oil than motor oil. the trans is only capable of handling about 300hp and 330 or so torgue. I have rebuilt mine 3 times and still am very cautious with it. when built right and setup properly it can be very dependable for a vehicle that does not have goobs of power. My truck as of right now has 380hp/420tq. the last two rebuild were because of this. It has been just over a year since the last and still holding strong. I have even ripped my trans mount in half since then and the trans is still holding together. there is alot of bad stigma about them, they are definitly not for daily haulin of trailers or for the strip but when setup and built right they make a great od alternative.

I would look for one of those NV3500-4500 trannies. 5 Speed tranny that came in GM V8 trucks. Supposed to be pretty strong, just aren't good for quick shifts or racing.... The T-5 is loved by many but seems to be pretty weak. I know a couple guys with T-5s behind 250ish HP 305's, they hold up pretty well. A buddy of mine had a 350 in his old S10, pretty healthy motor I'd say around 300-320ish HP and he trashed the T-5 quick.

There's a thread around here somewhere on swapping in a T-5. I believe you'll have to switch to a certain year S10 tailshaft housing to get the shifter in the correct location. As has already been said, they aren't designed for more than ~300-330 ftlbs of torque. The NV3500 is rated at 330 ftlbs also, and the NV4500 is stouter but more of a truck transmission.....and more $$ when you do find one. It all depends on what you plan on doing with the truck
