Finally got the 61 Jimmy home!

After a couple months of getting hustled around by the guy that was suposed to bring this when he came to pick up another, I decided to borrow my dads truck and trailer and go get it myself. It is a little rougher than I originally thought based on pictures, but thats ok its a project. First we start to try to pull it on the trailer with the winch and one wheel was locked up so we had to hook on to it with the pickup and drag it ahead to get the wheel to unlock, finally managed to get it loaded right when it started pouring rain! The packrats have got in to in in the last couple months, it was clean when I seen pics of it before now inside the cab and under the hood is horible:cuss: blasted packrats :cuss: The glass looked good in the pics but the windsheild is toas along with the pasenger side window someone did a horible job at trying to repair the front fenders and the drivers door is toast. But now sometime I can get started on it may be a lil bit before I have a chance to dive into it but at least its home now! Another GMC to add to the heard. Can someone decode that vin for me?

The hot water looking thing is your windshild wiper sprayer bag.

Re: Finally got the 61 Jimmy home!

But in all seriousness I am hoping whatever packrats, made the mess in the cab and eng compartment bailed on the 2 hour drive home, thats the last thing I need in my backyard. Have dogs in the backyard to and dont want to use poison, if the dogs get one after it ate poison it would possibly kill the dog too right? So what is the best alternative to make sure the packrats are gone, and not in my truck, yard, garrage, or house? I hate these little varmits, this means war:sumo:

Re: Finally got the 61 Jimmy home!

Maybe put some glue traps in the cab and engine compartment to see if there are any rats still in the truck.

I have dogs as well, so I don't use poison.

They're pretty effective- sprinkle a few cashews on the trap- and if there are any rats, you'll get them.

I got mine at the local dollar store- way cheaper than at the grocery store (you can pick up some cheap oven cleaner for degreasing while you're there as well ;))

I have fruit trees and nut trees in the yard, so I get the occasional rat in the basement.

leave it on the trailer and visit the car wash...

too late for the car wash, but it went through a good rainstorm on its ride home. that prolly didnt do it any good tho, I will have to get some glue traps and hope I have time next week to clean their junk out of there. I need to get some pics of the cab, it got it pretty bad....:cuss:

O ya and another ? I have read that these were coil spring rear untill later in the serries, this one definitly has leaves. Thick ones at that. Did the 1 tons not have coils?

Re: Finally got the 61 Jimmy home!

Glad to see you finally got it home. I think the 1 tons did come with leafs through all those years. You could probably check on Jolly's site to be sure.

Got most of the rat stuff out of the eng bay this morning. Can definitly tell this will be a learning experiance! That water pump has to be the most massive I have seen, and the fuel pump is on the water pump, strange. Should turning the fan run the fuel pump? It looks like It should, I dont see what else would drive it. None the less I can spin the fan freely, it encounters no resistace. I managed to turn the crank slightly by hand so at least I know Its not locked up. I will have many questions along the way right now just wondering about that water/fuel pump right now.

Looks like a good start. Is that a Doonan's emblem on the cowl filler? I used to work there when I was a youngin'.

Yes Doonans in Great Bend Kansas.

I thought so. I worked there from 94-96, when I went to PSU. My family all still lives in Great Bend.

Re: Finally got the 61 Jimmy home!

Cool deal I am only a couple hours from there, also to go with my water/fuel pump question above, how hard should this motor be to turn over? I budged it by hand and thought I was in the clear. Now it takes alot with a breaker bar to get it to turn a lil bit. I only weigh 135 lbs, but it takes most of what I can muster to turn her over. Is that normal? Everything about this truck is foreign to me. Especially this huge beefy V6.

Re: Finally got the 61 Jimmy home!

Pull the plugs and shoot some ATF/Marvel Mystery Oil/Motor Oil in there. Let it sit at least overnight. I would bet that the rings are siezed, and will need to be broken free.

justcuz 07-30-2009 12:52 PM

Re: Finally got the 61 Jimmy home!

When the oil loosens up the rings just move it a little and squirt some more down in there. You don't want to break a ring on a rusted ridge in the cylinder.
