New project need help and ideas!!! 68 c10!

Hey everyone, finally got my account activated, been waiting for so long. Firstly, everybody on this forum has knowledge, skills, and tools to do this stuff. Of the above three i have none. But i love hot rods. I live inthe city i drive a new bmw and im 20!. I have a single garage (unlike most people with big yards here). So for me to build tis truck is hard especially with no experience.

The truck!

I picked up a 68 c10 fleetside for cheap from an old man about an hour drive away. Now whats weird is that it has a small window which means it cannot be a 68? I guess the cab was swapped maybe. The truck doesnt have much rust esp. for a 40 year old truck and it has a 305? engine from 80's firebird i was told............. The gauges are mint! and the interior overall isnt in bad condition. Has edelbrock valve covers ( rusty) and dual cherry bomb exhaust. It need basically full resto. But has potential.

Questions:

1. My bed at htbe ack is like tilted more to one side it seems lifted, is that just bolted down wrong?

2. I want to paint my rusted frame. What prep work? sanding? i wasthinking then rust check primer (to stop rusting) and then rust paint? all cans?

3. I wanan sand this baby down to paint it.. I got a orbital sander that takes round pads with velcro at hte back. What grit do i begin at?? To sand down th paint and some rust... What primer? Do i shoot rust inihibitor before paint?

4. What body filler? i picked up the "original bondo". For holes and rust there is this "patch" bondo makes that u apply over the hole instead of weldign metal... I think thats what ill use since i hav no access to any welding machines.

5. i got it started (wohooo). It will need some work and i want to swap the auto tranny with a Standard. Whcih would fit with a 305 chev engine?

6. Lastly, what color?? Ferrari red? ORANGE (ill attch a pic of the c10 i love), or black??

Please help!.

The bed looks to be a 67 also like the cab. The tailgate is from a 73 and up model though. You better take a closer look at why the bed is sitting like that. Maybe there is something bent. It looks also to have been a standard truck from the factory. Does it have disc brakes in the front, check it out.

This is a great forum that can answer all of your questions if you look around in the different sections.

Just my 2 cents I would make it a running and drivable truck before doing any body work. Have fun with it. Nate

Nice project

For the bed looking tweeked, try airing up all the tires & see if it looks right then

Looks to me like its a 67 that has 68 front fenders (unless the marker lights were filled in the bed)

As said above, start with getting it drivable & enjoy it for a bit before you jump head first into a project

hi, i am at the sanding stage myself and for the frame i used a 120 grit with the orbital sander cause it was cheaper than something grittier.i would recomend 80 grit, believe me its quicker. you cannot get all of the inner frame with the orbital sander so i did some sand blasting and touch up with a die grinder.as for paint check out the kbs paint website. its beautiful, flexes, wont chip and you can do two coats with one 36$ quart.for the body, i would use a 120 grit with a finishing sander.your far from paint but i love orange myself.
