DIY4x crossmember with BBC and Headers,4x4

Hello fellow first gen lovers.... i've been up for a few weeks now researching this topic only to become a little more confused than when i first started. i found a ton of good info but not exactly what i was looking for and it was scattered all over. here is what i have:
67 3/4 ton 4X4 with 454 (crappy jimmy rigged mounting) sm465/np205 and no name paper thin headers.
this is whats wrong:
my headers ALWAYS leak... i need new ones (they were poorly modified to fit truck, one collector is shortened very badly)
My engine jumps around in the engine compartment like a mexican jumping bean due to previous owner BBC swap "custom" engine mounts:hh:
Has anyone installed a DIY4X crossmember with a BBC and Headers(on a 4x4)???
What's the Part number for the headers? what brand??
i know of Thorley 304-y but Burt4x4 said they dont fit all that great and they are over $500!!! (not going to happen...) Any alternatives?
i know a couple guys are doing this but they haven't updated their threads as far as i need :/ i feel like i know you guys ive read so much of your threads:lol:

thanks for any info, i hope this will help others in my situation!

Do you have to run headers? Manifolds are a nice choice, easier on the wallet, too! Saw one guy notch his frame to get the headers in, sounds extreme to me. The DIY crossmember is really nice, make sure you buy the one with flanges on the crosstube, easier to drop the pan

Welcome to the boards from Philly, looks like you've been around awhile, but only 2 posts...? Got pics?

yeah here are some pics, none real recent but its look the same i just have new wheels and tires now... i usually got to ck5.com but this site is much better for what i need.

i would really prefer headers. i going to swap in a 454HO crate motor with fuel injection eventually so i might as well get the exhaust done now.

Re: DIY4x crossmember with BBC and Headers,4x4

ok heres what i have found for headers: 396-454
Dynomax 67-8(something) 2wd blazer/pickup/etc. P# 86022 $330
Flowtech 69-86 2wd blazer P# BIG-31530FLT $260
Thorley 73 4wd 402 blazer P# 304-Y $530

these are the only ones I have found besides the ones used on 2wd trucks here on the site...

which ones fit the best? any other P#'s i can try?

the dyno max fit real close to the shackle bolt on the 4x4 (thanks yukon jack) on the driver side

You can send the first design back to Kert, he will modify for you

I have 71 4x4 489 with a DIY4x cross member.I'm working that exact header clearance issue. I should have it figured out by the end of the week. I let you all know how I fixed it.

Re: DIY4x crossmember with BBC and Headers,4x4

cool thanks ridin high. i am very interested in seeing pics if you got them. i found another set of headers that might work.... they are for a 72 4x4 with a 454.

hooker super comp HOK-2817HKR

anyone try these ones? it seem like they should work. they have 1 7/8 primaries which are nice but still have the 5/16 flanges and i want at least 3/8 flanges. anyone know of any besides the thorleys tri-y's?

I am going to try hooker super comps #2841. They have a 2" primary which i need. but they are for a 2wd, im going to try them on anyway. Unless somebody knows a 2" primary header for a 4wd 71?

Re: DIY4x crossmember with BBC and Headers,4x4

Ok, so we found out that the DIY4x crossmember is a mess for the BBC. I asked Kert to send me a new crossmember that hasn't been welded so I can take measurements and weld it up according my needs. Next week my buddy should have shop room and time for us to mock and weld.

Does the DIY4X crossmember work fine for bigblocks without headers?

Yes, my motor bolted up just fine. Depending on your oil pan the connecting pipe may cause your oil pan not to clear. That was the only other issue I had, but I have deep moroso pan.
