Help with a tranny leak on my '87
So I bought my '87 2500 and have been driving it, but the leak that I knew about when I bought it.... is pretty bad. After driving around and leving it overnight, it leaves a puddle the size of a brake drum on the ground. It 90wt, and I am certain its coming from the tranny. I would just like a diagram to see the different parts between the tranny and transfer case. Can't find that really..... The previous owner put some grey stuff on to try to seal it, but it isn't working..... I'll take pics of it today. Do you think It can be temporarily fixed without taking it apart? I could do it at my house, but I would rather get a quick fix so I can drive it for now..... It's my only vehicle on the road tm. Any help would be appreciated. It's a SM465/NP208 setup btw.

Re: Help with a tranny leak on my '87
Try to clean the area up to see where it is coming from. I haven't had anything with an SM465, so I don't know where they are prone to leaking. In your favor, at least it has a 208 transfer case, vs. a 203 or a 205. Those suckers are heavy!

Re: Help with a tranny leak on my '87
I'll have to clean the area realy good. I tried to get a couple pics.... they are tough to look at though. It's not apparent where the leak is coming from really:

Re: Help with a tranny leak on my '87
Is that RTV or JBweld?

Re: Help with a tranny leak on my '87
I'm not sure, it must be one of those.... It doesnt work at all though. It looks like it has to come apart.

Re: Help with a tranny leak on my '87
It leaked everywhere today. I have to park the thing until I have the money and time to do it.

Re: Help with a tranny leak on my '87
if its JB Weld its prolly a crack in the housing.... id first get some engine degreaser and spray the whole thing and clean it off then determine EXACTLY where its coming from... If youre lucky its a gasket there if you aint youre going for a new transfer case case

Re: Help with a tranny leak on my '87
in that third pic there appears to be a crack near the bottom bolt but i cant tell for sure with that image

Re: Help with a tranny leak on my '87
I should be able to get better pictures when I jack it up. Isn't the a connecter between the tranny and tcase? I think that's the crack location.... but the tranny is losing oil quickly.

Re: Help with a tranny leak on my '87
Damn I hope I dont need a new transfer case..... it could be cracked up top where i cant see though..... But then again the tranny is losing oil as well..... This might get expensive. I have a 79K10 out back, same tranny but a cast iron tcase.....

Re: Help with a tranny leak on my '87
UPDATE!!!!!
I jacked her up tonight, cleaned the are of the leak and finally found the crack. It's about 2-2.5 inches long, it looks like a hairline fracture but it seeps out quickly. Plans are to drain the tranny, clean the area really well and attempt to JB weld it, I've used the stuff before with success. Maybe it will cut down on the leaking, or temporarily stop it. We will see.... I'll take a picture of the crack for you guys tomorrow. Worst case scenario the JB weld does nothing and I pull it apart and replace the piece. Does anyone know that that's called? It's what I took pics of, right behing the transmission..... |
Re: Help with a tranny leak on my '87
Sounds like the adapter.
