Stainless muffler
The recent update to my 77 suspension has required that I make changes to my exhaust. I had a custom built Y-pipe that went to a hi-flow cat then a Flowmaster SI/SO and on to a 2.5" tailpipe.
The results were a nice low rumble that came to life when you revved it up. It was nice and quiet in the cab as well. Unfortunately due to lack of use, my ceramic coated Flowmaster is rusting from th inside out. The h-flow cat has developed a rattle, and the tailpipe won't clear the ART AirBar system. For now, I want to replace the cat and the Flow with a single stainless muffler and add as much tailpipe as possible. Is anyone running a stainless muffler that they can recommend? I know that Magnaflow, Thrush, and several others make an all stainless muffler. Any other suggestions? Keep in mind, I don't want LOUD. I want a nice rumble, but I do not want it loud. |
Re: Stainless muffler
Ken, my vote would be for the magnaflow. they are quiet as stock w/ normal driving and idle w/ high flow cats and long tubes. but as soon as you get on it they really wake up. unexplainable sound on the 6.0!
its like a deep tone at idle and a deep loud yell at wot.(so my wife says when she has to follow me, because i dont even notice it) i have been thinking about going catless just for a change and make it louder while cruising. just keep in mind this is on the LS2. exhaust is a rough one for me... on the 4th set-up on the goat(its either too loud or not the right tone) and ive done the exhaust on the truck more times than i care to think about and was never totally happy with the results. its just ridiculous when the exhaust is louder than the truck really is! |
Re: Stainless muffler
If you like how it sounds now, flowmaster recently started offering 409 stainless in most of their product lines......

Re: Stainless muffler
Yep Flowmaster makes some stainless ones, and you may also want to check out the Hushpower mufflers that I have. I have not heard them yet, but hey are supposed to be "mellow".

Re: Stainless muffler
I have been using dynomax ultra flos for quite a while now. There is nothing that flows better. They are a straight thru design, yet still very quiet. I don't know how they are as quiet as they are.
I originally started using them on the Buicks, because they aren't very loud cars anyway and with a turbo you want as little restriction as possible. But the mufflers really made them quiet at idle, but a nice tone, cut down on drone, and had a very aggresive WOT sound. They are on my mustang again with no cats and sound great. The most unobnoxious 5.0 you will ever hear. I couldn't be happier with the noises coming out of the tailpipe on that car. Much quiter/more mellow than any other I have been around. I highly recommend them. You won't find a better flowing/quieter muffler. period. Plus, if you are cramped for space, they come in oval(looks like a normal muffler), round, and bullet. (not sure if all are available in ss, the oval is for sure). The bullets are a little bit louder-still quiet though. |
Re: Stainless muffler
Ok guys, good input. Lets take a look at my delimi here. I have a really nice custom built Y pipe that tucks up snug under the truck. I "really" hate to waste it and start from scratch running everything down the passenger side.
So, what I plan to do is eliminate the rattling cat, run a SI/SO muffler and as much tailpipe as I can squeeze under there. This will probably end up in a turn down (or out) that faces toward the wheel well. I am just going to use slip joints and clamps till I find the right combo. With that said, do you feel the long bullet style that Dynomax, Thrush, and Magnaflow offer are a good choice. Would I be better off with a traditional oval/square muffler? |
Re: Stainless muffler
ken, i just measured my magnaflows and they are pretty big. 14" long, 8" wide, and 5" tall. thats just the muffler itself. i maybe wrong but the longer the quieter w/ good flow has been my understanding. so the magnaflows may be too big...
i love the sound of a flowmaster but on a dyno (ls2 gto) it actually lost h.p. by a few...- just a heads up. |
Re: Stainless muffler
Ken,... I run the Stainless Flowmaster 50 series.
But I like them quiet,... not loud like the 40 series. |
Re: Stainless muffler
The more tailpipe you add after the muffler the quieter it will get is my understanding. Mine dumps just past the rear axle

Re: Stainless muffler
I think Bassani makes a great sounding muffler . Since it seems like you will be limited on the length after the muffler , and you do not want it too loud , I would look into the Bassani. If not them then I would think about a Magnaflow.

Re: Stainless muffler
When you say bullet style are you refering to a "turbo" style muffler, or ????
|
Re: Stainless muffler
i'd throw another couple 40 series on there.you'll save money and they'll will last for several year's.you don't wanna sound like some early 90's buick lesabre.a truck that nice has got to have a note to it.:smoke:

2 Attachment(s)
Here is the first part of the custom built Y-pipe. Since the cat has a rattle, I plan to eliminate it from the system. I am going to put the muffler there, and run tailpipe back to the axle

bullet = glasspack?

Re: Stainless muffler
SS Magnaflows were on "GQ" before I destroyed her. Keep in
mind this is a built motor, it was in the garage and I was out side, the dog was barking, and it dumped out the sides with only about 22" of tailpipes. The tubing was all 2.5" and I had Hedman Elite Headers. No clips of it driving or out of garage. YES, I would run them again and probably will on "YFTSB" :D |

Bullet is just the shape of the muffler. I have set set that is completely stainless including the packing. |
Re: Stainless muffler
Alrighty then... thanks for the illusttrated verification.
My vote stays the same... they are available in both T-409 and T-304 stainless, and have built in heat shields. Just may be slightly long for your application. here are the ones I have: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HSH-12518300/ from Summit Racing: "Mufflers from Hushpower that are perfect for your hot rod. These Hushpower II mufflers are designed for use with street rods, customs, and sport trucks. They feature stainless steel construction with an internal, layered-laminar jet engine gas flow design that uses guided sound control with broadband sound cancellation for a mellow '50s tone. These Hushpower II mufflers support up to 400 hp, while delivering outstanding looks, durability, and sound control. Give your vehicle a unique, hot sound with a set of Hushpower II mufflers. Re: Stainless muffler
This is good info, this is why I have not put anything on the blazer yet. I am up in the air on what to run.
The Magnaflows are what I have been thinking about, but not sure. Ken good post I hope this will make my mind up. Craig, that does sounds.. |
Re: Stainless muffler
id say go with a magnaflow its a straight through design but has a mellow tone. the ovals are quiter than the bullet style ofcourse. I have one on my 99 and like it.

Re: Stainless muffler
on my 96 ext cab i had a flowmaster dual in dual out muffler and it was loud in the cab and kept gettin louder and the interior started rattleing,
i changed it out with (2)-single in- single out magnaflows dumped off the muffler and its quiet at idle and way quieter then the flowmaster at highway speed ,not as deep tone as a flowmaster but it sounds good, plus magnaflow has a life time warranty. im happy with my investment |
Re: Stainless muffler
i have MAC stainless mufflers. kinda hard to find but i like the sound. more of a deeper tone than loud these were on alot of 5.0 mustangs i used to know
mine is the traditional size shape with 3" in and out |
Re: Stainless muffler
