Power steering fluid?

I just brought home a '79 C30 with hydroboost brakes. The power steering fluid is low, but what kind of fluid do I add? I know some vehicles use "power steering fluid" and some just use ATF...well the fluid I have looks like ATF but smells like PSF! I'm not sure which it is.

I've always used regular ATF, never had a problem.

Yeah, well, it's kinda both...the power steering pump powers the brake booster instead of a vacuum line.

Re: Power steering fluid?

Specs call for power steering fluid, period. This is especially important where hydro-boost is concerned because of the added load on the P/S pump. PS fluid is heavier and lubricates better, also it is less likely to foam or attack seals. jim

we used to use tractor hyd. trans. fluid for all three in the farm truck... trans, P.S., and Brakes... never a problem...

Re: Power steering fluid?

On closer inspection last night it does seem more like dirty PS fluid rather than ATF. I'll try and dump the whole thing so I don't end up mixing two different things....
