Re: factory tire size for 66

I cannot confirm if the options changed by 1966, but the shop manual for the 1960 Chevy C-10, C20 shows 6 sizes were offered in both tube and tubeless:

6.70-15 4 ply rating
6.70-15 6 ply rating
7.10-15 4 ply rating
6.00-16 6 ply rating
6.50-16 4 ply rating
6.50-16 6 ply rating

Don't know for 66 but my 65 owners manual has the following:

5000 GVW shown on plate but reduced for lesser equipment as shown below.

6.70-15 4ply tire included in the base price 4100 GVW
7.10-15 4ply 4400 GVW

With the RPO G50 heavy rear springs
7.10-15 6ply 4800 GVW
7 -17.5 6ply 5000 GVW

Re: factory tire size for 66

original standard tire size for 1966 was 7.75 4 ply 15".the 1965 and earlier trucks used 6.70 changed to 7.75 in 1966.if i'm not mistaken the modern size replacement for the 6.70 and the 7.75 is p215/75r15.i think those narrow itty bitty tires look good on stock trucks.lord knows i saw my share on these trucks back in the 70's when i was growing up.back in the 70's the size that replaced the7.75 was g78 and then went to the p215/75r15's in the 80's.the 7.75 tires are currently available.i think i have seen them advertised at coker tire in chattanooga tennessee in the hemmings motor news.hope this helps.

The current sizing numbers for a 7.75 -15 would be about a 195/80-15.

A 205/75 - 15 would give you about the same diameter but a little wider tire (8.00 - 15) by 1/4 inch than the original.

I think the 205/75 - 15 is the closest modern size to the original. The load rating is 1477 # at 35 psi. That pretty much matches the 5000# GVW.

As Collins says a 215/75 -15 works but would be a little bigger OD and section width.

If you are going to drive the truck I would recommend the 205/75R15.

Pure restoration would use the antique tire (Coker) route I guess.
