Doesn't 3.73:1 fit a 4 series? Or is this a special gearset designed to fit a 3 series?

First of all I assume we are talking about the 12-bolt truck diff. Series 2 fits up to 2.73, series 3 fits up to 3.42 and series 4 fits 3.73 and higher. Its not related to the year.

In some cases a special set of gears can be made to fit the next lower series carrier. Or a shim can be used on the ring gear.
