The boxwrench site I sent the link for has all this info. Dont use silicone, use a head bolt sealer, AKA anaerobic sealer, they sell it at all auto parts places.

not a single head bolt takes silicone..
use the ANAEROBIC sealers...
it seals due to a lack of oxygen and is less likely to fail under those conditions..
it is thinner so it has a higher chance to adhere to the threads and grooves...
just my two cents

NO anarobic sealer either, it will lock the threads. Go to your local GM store and get thier teflon head bolt sealer. ALL the bolts get the sealer because it affects torque. Used it for years and still do. jim

Ok now I am confused. I was told to use Permatex #2 on all the head bolts but the concensus seems to be otherwise?

use the permatex stuff in the white tube thing... should have a flat nozzel on it.

Yo! I've used Permatex thread sealant on ALL the head bolts in each of the 350 V8s I've built without any failures or problems. Comes in normal sealer (blue print, white tube), or high temp. (red print, white tube), just as mongoose has described. I bought mine at NAPA.
The Permatex remains pliable and will not lock the threads,...it also lubes the threads to allow for proper head bolt torque.
It is recommended by Permatex to seal head bolts.
I use it on ALL the head bolts for the simple reason that it's intended for that use, lubes to provide proper torque, and you don't have to guess which bolts go through to water jackets.
Todd.

"permatex anaerobic sealer"
bam! reccomemded by the dealer **** and my drag buddies... so i dont argue i just do and i have not had any problems...

but we all have different opinions.. what does the BOOK say.. =-)

Anaerobic sealer is not and will not lock up the threads. Ypu can use it on all threads that need a sealer.

well when i took it apart it had red silicone on it *same stuff you'd use on your valve cover gasket* so i just went with some permatex in the white tube, as thats what my parts guy told me to use. but anyways thanx for the info everyone very helpful.

Yeah the white I temp Permatex thread sealer in a tube is what you want. Just did this today, I used the white tube high temp Permatex that has the flat nozzle. Also, cleaned all the threads up. Then I thought about it, which isn't always a productive process and decided that I should use both: the Permatex red high temp gasket maker and the white thread sealer because I have a half tube of the red already. I put the white thread sealer on the "threads" and ran a small bead of red on the bolt shaft. Anyway I torqued them down in the proper sequence and made three passes to be sure to prevent bolt cross talk. Then I adjusted my lifters with the plugs out (which makes it easier to turn by hand). What a long day and my back hurts from leaning over the radiator support for hours!
