Vintage Tags
I was wondering if any other states let you run vintage tags the same year as your truck like Alabama. I just got my mint unissued tag in today. Looks cool just wished I could use a 64 they were red and white would look better on my truck. Just thought I would share. Ive went on a tag buying spree to hang in the garage.

Re: Vintage Tags
I know that MO does, but obviously only if the number isn't currently being used. For a mere $25 fee you can run the plates forever and never have to have an inspection again.

Re: Vintage Tags

Re: Vintage Tags
Here in NC, we are allowed to run year of manufacture tags on vehicles 35 years old or older for no extra fees. You must first register the vehicle and get a normal tag for it. You can run the old tag on the back as long as you have the regular tag in the vehicle with you. The only extra money you pay is whatever you pay for the old tag (from private parties, tag collectors/restorers, swap meets, etc.).
I run old tags on my '63 pickup and my '53 bel air. Not that I have anything to hide, but the cops can't run these old tags if they were to get behind you. Either they would come back blank or to whoever may by chance have the same number currently. I assume most cops know the law allows this, but I'm kind of surprised when they've been behind me and not pulled me over. |
Re: Vintage Tags

Re: Vintage Tags
blk65flt I have been told (and seen them) the same by several folks who are running them in Georgia. I have yet to ask anyone official. I plan to put one on the 63, but the nice ones can get kind of pricey for my budget. Anyone happen to have one?

We can run them in SC. You have to submit a picture of the tag you want to run. It has to be the year of manufacture and be the original finish and in good condition. You call them with the number and if it is unused and meets their number rules they will reserve that number until you submit the pictue and paperwork. Then there are no limitations on the tag. You have to carry the current decal in the truck and they give you an official letter to show law enforcement if you get stopped. They can run your number, it has to be unique.

Re: Vintage Tags
VA allows it. You apply for a vanity plate with the numbers of your old tag, then you're good to go.

Re: Vintage Tags
montana allows it, but you have to run 2 (1 front, 1 back) and they have to be in good condition.
the 60's plates can be alittle challenging to find in good shape, since they were stamped aluminium/alloy, and the only paint is on the letters which was black. it is also tough to find 2 matching plates in good condition. |
Re: Vintage Tags
Here in Ohio you can get historical plates on a vehicle that's at least 25 years old. They cost $35 and are good for 50 years. If you have historical plates and want to run the year specific plates you take them to the DMV and they photocopy the plate. It doesn't cost anything extra. If you're using the year specific plates you only need the rear and keep the historical plates somewhere inside the vehicle.
