Cleaning inner frame rails
I have a frame that needs cleaning and sanding but my air sander will not fit in the inner rails. Is there something I can use to take off the paint on the inner rails? I can't afford to have it sandblasted right now so that's not an option. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Cleaning inner frame rails
knotted wire cup on a drill does a pretty good job ... can be picked up at Lowe's, Home Depot and I think I've seen some at Harbor Freight even.

I've also seen needle scalers advertised but don't know if they work well. |
Re: Cleaning inner frame rails
/\ x2 on the descaler, they work well to remove rust, paint, etc.

Re: Cleaning inner frame rails
defiantly a needle scaler!
waaaay faster than the wire brush. |
Re: Cleaning inner frame rails
got a link to a decent scaler ? Man I thought once I was out of the Navy I'd never use one of those again !! Guess again I suppose !!

Re: Cleaning inner frame rails
harbor freight has them for 45 bucks if you like bargain tools and northern tool has 80 buck. Looks like you could get a attachment if you have a air hammer. Just googled it to give you an idea, might go shopping to. $150 bucks seems to be a going rate for sandblasting, at least that's what I was quoted.

Re: Cleaning inner frame rails
3M has a rust, dirt, sanding disc that is black and about 5" in dia. it kinda looks like a sponge, but is a very hard material that will wear down and eventually be about 2" dia. or less. Lowes, Home Depot, NAPA, Autozone.

Re: Cleaning inner frame rails
x2 on 3m black strip tool. buy a few of them. i believe mine came from auto paint jobber but i think menards home depo has them. put it in die grinder i just used it to strip paint off hood and fender. on sheet metal dont let it sit in one place too long it may heat up metal.
you dont need a special chuck to use it... just a quarter inch bolt 2 nuts 2 fender washers. 3m also sell a "special" roloc disk of the same material but you need a roloc pad holder for it. |
