What to do with the firewall?

Should I just sand and rattle can the firewall or sand and POR-15.

I plan to tear down and paint the truck down the road (much, much later). For now, I am just rebuilding the front end and engine to get it back on the road.

The truck is black over the original orange with white top and sides. I like the black but wish the PO would have stuck with the original. I like the color.

Here is a picture of the firewall. The PO tried to paint it with everything in place. Not much prep work. It was flaking so I hit it with the pressure washer when I was degreasing the front frame.

POR-15 should have something over it. So you should sand it POR-15 it and then spray can it and it should last for a long time. That POR-15 is tough stuff!!

por15 needs to b on bare metal//if you go to bare metal and por15it then whiule it's still tacky spray can over the por it will last and adgere much better

I used Rustoleum and applied it with sponge brushes when I redid my suspension parts. I cleaned the parts with a wire brush attachment on my 4.5" grinder and it has held up really well. I wanted to use POR-15 but couldn't really afford it. I'm not sure how well it would work on a body panel, but I figured I would throw it out there nonetheless.

I use POR 15 exclusively. Do it right. Especially since you are in Ohio. You need the rust protection.

I'm not a big fan of POR-15. I've had problems with it flaking and pealing off. May have been poor surface prep on my part but I doubt it. I've given some thought to trying Eastwoods product. They have an article on a test that compared POR-15 to Eastwoods version on their website. I agree on painting over the POR-15 if you do decide to use it.

Sand it down shoot some epoxy prime then rattle can satin black. It will give you protection from rust and look nice and clean when your done.

If you plan on doing it properly later, then I would just scrub it clean, sand, and paint with some good spray bomb. To properly POR it, you'll be stripping it to bare metal, letting it surface rust or hitting it with some 80 grit on the bare metal, then POR'ing and then painting. That's a lot of work on a truck with nice paint on the outside, and every step of the prep you run the risk of damaging that nice paint.
If you POR over paint, it WILL peel off, period. This stuff is very picky as to what it will bite onto. But, if done properly, it is an awesome product.

It has been two years....hopefully he has painted the firewall with something by now.
