TH 350 Tranny vs. 700r4
Okay how expensive would a well built 700r4 be vs. the old trusty TH350 with a 3000 stall converter?
Seems like the TH 350 would be WAY cheaper to build than the overdrive tranny. Any thoughts? I will be using a solid lifter camshaft so yes I need a 3k stall. And thinking the 700r4 would just cost way too much for my setup. Am I wrong? Thanks! |
Re: TH 350 Tranny vs. 700r4
700R4 would be about twice as much to build. Depending on how much highway driving you might do it could be worth the investment.

This will be no trailer queen. So yeah that is why I am considering the 700r4. Now I just need to hear from folks that have one that can handle 425-450+ hp at the rear wheels. |
Re: TH 350 Tranny vs. 700r4
Check out Bow tie Overdrives. They have several 700R4 options to choose from and their TV cable system is pretty cool. I have a level 2 700R4 and have been happy with it. But its behind a ZZ4 small block with only 350HP at the flywheel.

But for me I would rather have a buddy rebuild one with good quality parts. Thanks for the reply. |
Re: TH 350 Tranny vs. 700r4
Check out Transmissions To Go, in Arnold MO. They build alot of stuff for the local racers and rodders. Imho,2nd gear kinda sucks in a 700 r4 cuz 1st is kinda low.

But I know nothing about 2nd. :smoke: Yeah I've had dealing with Transmissions to Go, very good folks there. Thanks for reminding me! :metal: |
Re: TH 350 Tranny vs. 700r4
If you want OD, go 4L80E. Just like the TH350, the 700r4 got better as they engineered out the weaknesses.
Here's one listed in SL craigslist. Don't know if that's your area of MO, but that's the city I think of as the gateway west. |

Here ya go
http://www.jakesperformance.com/700-R4_and_4L60E.html Jake is even a member here. I've got one of his 700r4s in my Camino. Once I got the lockup setup the way I wanted,, simply love it. |
Re: TH 350 Tranny vs. 700r4
I've read bowtie overdrives is not customer friendly. After they got your $$$$ google them up and look at what customers have said. I'VE GOT A 700R4 FROM PHOENIX PERFORMANCE IN WEATHERFORD TX. ALMOST 2K BUT WORTH EVERY PENNY!! GOOD TO 550 HP AND 500 FTLBTQ. IT'S THE 700R4 SS TRANS

Re: TH 350 Tranny vs. 700r4
Hey Scott, I was wrong. The 80e was based on the th400. It was the 60e that came from the 700r4. Don't forget Marv's lockup recipe. Good stuff.
Thanks for that Jakes link & the lockup info (from previous thread), Marv- -Todd |

Re: TH 350 Tranny vs. 700r4
I had no problems with bow tie overdrive. I had one behind a 420 hp 350. It took a beating and kept on going. I had no problem with their customer service, they helped me setup the TV cable, but that was 10 years ago.
Don't forget about the 200R4, better gear ratios and can handle just as much. |
Re: TH 350 Tranny vs. 700r4
I have a built 700 with a BTE 4000 Nitrous convertor with 456 gears. I lock it up a run 80 all day on the interstate

Re: TH 350 Tranny vs. 700r4
I googled the Phone number on the Jakshoe link and he has a Craigslist ad with 2004r's for $1000 . 3 of them at this price .

Re: TH 350 Tranny vs. 700r4
If your pockets are fat TCI is making a 4l80 shift like a 6 speed.

I am so poor (at the moment) I can hardly pay attention. But that sounds like a nice setup. |
Re: TH 350 Tranny vs. 700r4
Well do like my buddy did, buy the manual on whatever tranny you want and then build it yourself. I did my first 700r that way. But I had alot of his tools to use also.

Mine was build by a local builder. ~$2200 in parts. I can beat on it all day. Shifts greats and drives like a beast. If I bought one off the shelf, I would checkout this place. http://www.transmissioncenter.net/highperflist.htm Mine is between a Leve 3 and 4. |

Kenny @ PTC just redid my glide for the extra power and is gonna trade in my convertor for my new needs. Those guys are great but the 6 speed 4l80 is brand new and I don't think anyone but TCI is doing them yet. My buddie is head of the R&D department there. |

Re: TH 350 Tranny vs. 700r4
if you go with a 4l604 or 80e you can use a bauwman controller and make your own shift maps and control line pressure, its a stand alone unit so you can put that trans in anything you want.
