Broke 6.0

Truck crapped out on me today. 2000 Sierra 2500 4X4 with 6.0- 103,000 miles. Broke a valvespring. Sounded a lot worse than that, so I'm hoping it didn't bend the valve. Is this common, or has anyone else had this happen? Tips on easiest way to fix would be great- I don't want to take the head off if I don't have to.:smoke:

Re: Broke 6.0

I have seen this on several 4.8, 5.3 and 6.0’s and they usually don’t bend valves. No need to pull the head. Loosen the rocker arm then use compressed air to air up the cylinder with a high quality compression tester adapter, which usually has a provision for an air hose. When done right, once the cylinder is filled with air you may remove the valve spring without dropping the valve down into the cylinder. If you ever replaced valve stem seals with the head on the engine before it is the same procedure.

Yes, seen it happen many times. roller cams are hard on valve springs. LT1s are worse!

Got it fixed and it runs a lot better than it did before. Spring must have been crappin' out for a while before it let go. All it cost me was $2.97 for a new spring from dealership. I won't count the $40 in gas I put in my dad's truck I had to borrow. Also, first LS engine I've seen with iron heads.

Also you should replace all the springs. next time a spring gives out you might not be so lucky. and while your at it put new valve guide seals in too.

I agree, should replace them all and make sure the RR pedastals are TQ'd properly.
