700 R4 help

Looking for help.

Planning on installing a 700 R4 in my '61 GMC to a 283. I have found one from a 1994 Chevy truck with 60,000 miles on it. Owner says it is not electrinic, has the kick down cable, and was working fine whwn removed. He wants $400.00 for it.

Is this the correct transmission to install and do you think the price is good?

Thanks

Peter

Must not be a 94 model transmission then. Last of the true 700R4 was about 91 or 92 then the 4L60E took over by 92-93.

Re: 700 R4 help

HotrodYJ's right on the years - I believe you can swap speedo cable driver to the older gear; TV cable setup is tricky on the manifold if you don't have original pieces for your carb - I had to buy a custom cable setup for Holley 4-barrel, which is pricey. You'll also need to move the frame crossmember if you have one for automatic and shorten or replace driveshaft (700r4 is longer); auto shifter/linkage may also be an issue depending on what you have now

Bowtie Overdrives has a nice TV cable set up for just about any carb set up you can think of. Don't know about the trucks, but cars started running electric speedos in 86.
