steel wheels and wide whites?
I've been bitten, always liked these trucks but now I'm after one. It's a 2 owner '48 solid and complete, I'd post up some pics but that might give away it location  so for now you will just have to use your imagination.
So where is everybody getting the steel wheels and wide white wall tires? Are they expensive? I saw a guy on the HAMB who spent $2800 on 17" steelies and wide whites. Needless to say I nearly crapped myself. Hoping somebody can let me in on the secret here because I'm coming up empty on the searches. Leevon |
Re: steel wheels and wide whites?
Wheel vinteque has 17in steel smoothies, but they are about 230 or so each. I think I am just going to settle on some 15x8's and 15x10's. They are tons cheaper.

Re: steel wheels and wide whites?
I'd like to put some nice 18" wheels and tires on mine but will probably settle for stock 16" white wheels with stock dog-dish caps. Similar to my avatar photo but with caps. The stuff I want is about 3K.

Re: steel wheels and wide whites?
I had seen on another forum that someone was using spare tire rims from full size Dodge trucks as they're 20" if I remember correctly. There's a guy on the HAMB with a '53 GMC truck that has them (sgtusmc is his online name).

Re: steel wheels and wide whites?
There are a few guys running the dodge 20's which look cool. I just want to stay with the 5 on 4 3/4 lug pattern, since that is what is already on my truck.

Re: steel wheels and wide whites?
You can get wide whites through the vendors who advertise in the Rod and truck rags.
Price runs a good percentage more than black walls or narrow whites though. Wheel Vintique www.wheelvintique.com is one that will make you custom steelies. I'm thinking about going that route on the 48 this time and painting the wheels the same color as the body will be. I may just use stock GM 4-3/4 bolt pattern steel wheels though with either 57 Cad caps or moons and rings. The whole concept this time around is to have the truck look like it is a highly modified custom shop shop truck out of the mid/late 50's without the lettering. It will still be instantly recognized as an AD truck without any departure from that except the already frenched headlights. It will just be a lot lower and longer than normal. |
Re: steel wheels and wide whites?
That sounds like it will be nice too.

Re: steel wheels and wide whites?
Coker Tire sells a ton of wide whites. It's the only place my buddies go.

Re: steel wheels and wide whites?
I got 4 chrome cones ($40) and used them to cover '77 Oldsmobile hub caps/15" steel wheels that I found in my parents garage(free).

2 Attachment(s)
I'm running 15x7 ralley wheels with ribbed trim rings and center caps. Rears are 3" flappers ( port-a-walls) . Rears are in their 3rd year. Fronts don't last as long from the extra weight and make the tire flex more streatching the front flapper. I put a set of tires from Coker on last summer.
But the rears are still great and fool many a person at the shows. Attachment 506277 Attachment 506278 |
Re: steel wheels and wide whites?
I'm going to try the port-a-walls when the time comes, from what I researched, a little shoe glue and some port-a-walls will fool just about anyone unless you get right up on them
