1972 Blazer possibility

I found a 4X4 Blazer that I'm going to check out. It apparently ran and the 4X4 worked when he got it 4 years ago but it's been sitting since. It has a decent amount of rust (don't know the extent yet) and comes with some patch panels to fix some of it. He's asking $1,000 but needs it gone and will take any reasonable offer. What should I look for when I check it out tonight? Also, he doesn't have a title, but knows the guy who he got it from and could "probably" get the title. If he can't, how much does it cost and how hard would it be to get another title.

Thanks for any help.

personal experience - no title = don't buy it (unless you are parting it out).

Usually not worth the hassle - especially if the 'title holder' comes and finds his truck in your yard/garage...then you can kiss it (with the time/money you put into it) goodbye.

Pay particular attention to rust on the windshield frame, torsion boxes (the flat boxes under the driver and passenger seating area), and the floors in general. I wouldn't want the hassle of a title issue either - only pay what you would be willing to lose without regret in case you can't work through the title issue.

Get us some pics when you go look at it and we'll try to help you figure out the value. It's all about the rust!

If I can't go through the guy selling it to get the title could I contact the BMV with the VIN and find out who's name it's in to see if I could get the title through them and make sure it's legit?

:agree: With a deal like that I usually add up what the parts are worth to come up with a value, and if it's complete, and in decent shape, it's probably worth that much in parts. I don't think that getting a title would be that big a deal though, as long as it's not stolen, and has been sitting for years. Just get a bill of sale from him and take it to a title company.

Re: 1972 Blazer possibility

I checked the Blazer out tonight and it wasn't at all like the owner described. It seems that vehicles have about twice as much rust as the owner will tell you and I was expecting a good amount of rot, but when I got there the only thing on the body that was decent was the tailgate, everything else was pretty much gone. The owner tells me to make him an offer, I wouldn't make him an offer at all. He said the engines worth at least $200. I guess he didn't realize that I came for a Blazer not an engine.
