Options for door panels on 72 Cheyenne Super.
My 72 Super has speaker holes cut in the panels! Dang it.
So I've been looking at reproduction panels, but it seems there is a problem with reproduction panels not fitting reproduction wood grain inserts. (See page 105 of the current LMC). So I've got my eye on these factory original door panels, but there is one problem... they are black and my interior is green. Has anyone had any luck painting door panels a different color than original? What options are available in reproduction for wood grain inserts (specific to Cheyenne) and door panels? |
Re: Options for door panels on 72 Cheyenne Super.
I just picked up a set of NOS 72' Woodgrain panels last week off of ebay. That's about the best place to find some correct ones, as the only option of reproduction ones is LMC's plastic versions. On dyeing door panels, it can be done and look great. I prefer to buy a matching color that is mixed by my local paint store by PPG, it's called DBI. They can match it to your existing interior if you bring in a piece of your interior to match it to. I done this in my jeep and it's holding up strong for 2 years of everyday driving. Trevor

How do you go about the dyeing process?
Damn it!! You beat me to the eBay auction for those NOS panels :) |
Re: Options for door panels on 72 Cheyenne Super.
The dye as it's called is more like a paint, but a flexible paint. You want to really scrub your plastic pieces with soap, water, and a brilo pad. After you let that dry, spray some Bulldog Adhesion promoter in 2-3 mist coats. Let that sit for about 20 -30 min. After that, spray your DBI with a spray gun over the panels in mist coats as well. You can also use SEM rattle can dye, but sometimes they do not carry your interior colors. The best I can tell you, the thinner you can put it on, the better. Dye does not have to be really thick coated to work, and actually does better with a thinner uniform coat than thicker ones. Trevor

I was told that SEMS paint for vinyl and plastic is the best you can buy. I don't know about the green or black but the SEMS color match for my parchment interior is Phantom white. About 15 bucks a can with shipping.

Re: Options for door panels on 72 Cheyenne Super.
SEM is okay, but I recommend doing it with far superior dye. I have used SEM before, and it's okay for common colors of parchment and black, but to get a close dye for rarer interior colors I recommend having it mixed.

dye is the way to go//available at your local autopint supply store they have everything you need to do the job

I used SEM on my 67 Camaro interior (vinyl door panels, plastic kick panels, etc.) and it has held up fine for over 15 years.

That's good to know Mclairmo. The gentleman that told me that swore by it. It's not a paint, it's a dye.
Now Trevor may be right about the other rarer colors though. I'd guess that you'd just want to decide if you want your door panels to match your dash pad or vinyl in the seat and go have ppg or such match it up. |
Re: Options for door panels on 72 Cheyenne Super.
I have not done the panels in a 67-72 truck but many other interiors and personal cars, held up fine looked good for years......just do a VERY good job on prep, go over them several times with detergent at least twice, then a prep solvent to remove the detergent, wipe down with a MF towel, then paint. you'll be happy and especially for the $$$.

They can say it's a dye, but it will all come off with lacquer thinner much like a paint. So to me it will always be considered a paint. Trevor

Re: Options for door panels on 72 Cheyenne Super.
I just ordered a set from this site.
They have green too. http://www.truckandcarshop.com/trucks60_72/t60_022.html This has been the best catalog I have seen yet. I cant wait to get everything going with this truck. I got carpet, tank, door and kick panel carpet, bucket seat covers, door panels, steering wheel, dash pad, and sun visors all in blue. The truck will be pearl white in and out. |
Re: Options for door panels on 72 Cheyenne Super.
bradford, the reproduction door panels don't fit right. They take them out of their molds to quickly and they distort. Original is the only way to go on the 72' door panels for quality. Trevor
