How do I clean very hazy instrument lens plastic?

4 Attachment(s)
Anybody have any luck cleaning very hazy instrument lens plastic? I used some Meguiar's Clear Plastic Detailer on my original '73 and wow did it do a great job on all the sections except the real foggy part.:bowtie:
Any suggestions?

Meguiers also makes a clear plastic polish (#17 I think) that'll help out.
Or you can try crest tooth paste and an old terry cloth towel with some time and elbow grease you can get them to clean up pretty well. Just be sure to use the PASTE not the GEL tooth paste.

If you can make do for a bit, you can have mine - it's heaps better than that. I got a new one when I bought a clock for my cluster.

Send me a PM with your email.

I used a Powerball on the lenses for my motorcycle, then again on the hazy headlights on my '96. Worked great. After polishing, I put on a good coat of wax.

I have one that isn't nearly that bad, unfortunately I could not improve it much no matter what I did. It's like the sun had damaged the plastic lens all of the way through, rather than just the surface. I did not try wet sanding though.

Mine looked similar to that. I had a small amount of a 3M headlight restoration kit left after I used it, so I figured it wouldnt hurt to try that out.

It didnt remove it all, but it is 100x better. You could do the same with some regular sandpaper and plastic polish. If I remember right the 3M kit goes 500, 800, 1000, 3000 wet then polish. The damage is all the way through the lens, but by doing a sand and polish on both sides it will make the gagues much more visible.

Okay so I was feeling a little crazy and went and bought some 2000 grit sandpaper and some #17 Maguiars polish. It really scratched all the clean plastic areas and made very little positive headway with the hazed areas. I think I am going to buy a new lens from Brothers website. I think I found one there for $19--new. Thanks everybody. It was worth a try!:waah:

Flitz it works killer on badly yellowed headlights I would say it would clean this up pretty well....you will have to wet sand up to 2000/3000 but afterwords there like new

I could be a saleman for Flitz but it does work on alot of things like aluminum/brass/chrome and lens....I bought it after I put my foot in my mouth at a motorcycle show the guy was selling the worlds greatest product so I stuck my finger in the can and went to the next both/trailer rubbed some on an aluminun corner went back grabbed a papertowel and wiped it...you know I put little effort in it...dam thing was shining walked back and bought the package

I was wrong. Brothers has them for $49.99 new. Ouch. I think I'll try the Flitz system then I could use that to clean and polish my mags.
Thanks a lot Hottrucks.

tell yea what if it doesn't work I'll buy whats left from you....I will say use very little it seems like the less you use the better it works...also check there website for helpful hints...like the one about using flour to absorb the extra clean off hard to clean things like diamond plate aluminum......also I have tried to use the mothers polishing ball but it seems like there cloth ball works alot better on whels and such but in your lens a tissue will work best....I have done a couple of my own headlights and a few of my buddies it doesn't take long
