How about engine/trans info. Is it equipped with an air pump?

i would look at the wires on the starter, and see if they are almost touching or are melted. then I would get the starter checked. I had a 79 suburban that the starter stayed engaged and it had burned up the battery and was makeing the same noises that your describing.

which valve cover is the steam coming from?

Great answer. Prolly shorted wires to starter OR stuck solenoid.

it sounds as if i try to start it now that i can hear the fly wheel spinning but it seems the starter isnt catching on any of the teeth i got it started once then i tuned it back off tried again and the start seem not to catch on something to turn the motor does this make sence?? thanks for the reply the steam was coming from the right side

The starter wiring sounds like a good place to start. It may have gotten melted and is keeping the solenoid engaged longer than it should.

It may be melted plastic smoke you are seeing and not steam.

Having the solenoid stuck my have caused some flywheel or bendix gear damage when the engine fired up so the teeth are not engaging in all areas of the flywheel.
