Opinions on best sounding exhaust???
 

Putting a 377 stroker in our truck, and I'd like a muscle sound, but subdued enough not to whiz people off or make it super loud inside the cabin.

I am certain there are plenty of opinions here, would you mind sharing them with me?

I like the sound of Flowmasters, but they do tend to resonate in the cab. I used to have a set of 40 series on my '62. It gets pretty loud in there... Maybe a set of 50 series?? Or Magnaflows... Good luck!

I just put magnaflows on my 66 with a vortec 350, headers, dual 2.5" with H-pipe, dumped after the rear axle. Very mellow from idle to about 3,000 rpm and then bam! they really snort after that.

I run Flowtech Terminator mufflers on 2 1/2" pipes, with turndowns just before the rear axle.

They have a deep mellow rumble at idle and get quieter at freeway speeds much like the old Walker Corvair turbo mufflers from decades ago.

With a H pipe installed (which I have now) they almost sound like a 60's Corvette to my untrained ear. Without an H pipe, they have a narly bark when you romp the throttle. At one time they were about half the cost of Flowmasters, but I'm not sure that's true anymore. Also, they can be installed in either direction, which was important in my application. I've never had droning in the cab with these mufflers, with or without an H pipe. Years ago I installed Cyclone turbo mufflers in a 67 Chevelle and they droned so bad I had to replace them.

I would disagree with the 40 series Flowmasters. 2-chamber and very resonant in my truck. I would go with the 50's if I did it again. A little mellower but open up on acceleration.

50's would be the way to go if flowmaster or hushpower mufflers. Also magnaflow and dynomax have some mellow muffs.

not sure on these trucks or that engine, but i ran Gibson stainless on my old 93 fullsize 350 TBI...they were pretty mellow but sounded good when you mash on it

I agree, we put the 40 series on my dad's 70 Camaro Z28 with 2-1/2" it sounds awesome but at certain rpm's it does resonate a bit, but with it being a car it isn't so bad, our truck it would be worse. My truck has glass packs now and I can't wait to have the coin to change to the 50's. If I drive anymore that a half hour I think it starts to resonate in my head!

on the flowmasters if you get the delta flows it reduces the resonance in the cab both of my daily drivers have flowmaster 40 series delta flows and they sound good and dont resonate on my 64 i have spin tech and they are loud all the time

IF you have the money go with Doug Thorley Headers and a Borla Exhaust. BIG MONEY. If not I would still go with Doug Thorley Headers and a Flowmaster Exhaust. You may want to visit Flowmaster.com, they have sound examples for each series of muffler. I have 70 Series on my 2500HD and is sounds great. You better get a set of earplugs if you get the 40 Series mufflers. JMO.

Yep, ran the purple hornie header mufflers on my '63......back in the 70's They're a little on the loud side, but hey I was a teenager then and they were the muffler to have back then. They did sound good though.

I have them on my '69 Camaro SS. They are bolted to the headers with tips that point toward the rockers.

They are loud and nasty..... nothing mellow about them at all.

I love'em, so does the better half.

The more I work on these old trucks the more I find that you can spend the money once and get what you paid for or you can have headaches later when you figure out what you bought wasn't such a deal after all. For example I bought a set of Shorty No Name Ceramic Coated block hugger Headers for my Sons 64 Shortwide (1968-327CI). After doing major surgery to the frame to get them to fit and finding out that the flanges were not level after starting the truck I figured out that the $100 that I paid for them cost me in the long run. Had it not been for my Sons Welding Skills It would have probably cost me more than I paid for the headers to have them machined. We ended up welding a bead around one of the ports and grinding it down ourselves and luckily got it to seal. Moral of the Story is you get what you pay for. Good Luck with finding the exhaust you want for your truck. By the way I have a great looking set of Ram Horns if your interested let me know. I had them sandblasted and I painted them with high Temp Silver.

I have a set Black Jack alumicoated headers. They are sprayed with molten aluminum as a protective coating. The primaries are 1 1/2" that dump into 3" collectors. They were a lot cheaper than ceramic at the time, I don't know about now. The pipes are true dual 3" with no x-pipe that flow thru 3" Borla XR-1 mufflers and turn out in front of the rear tires. The smaller primaries keep plenty of back pressure for low end torque while the 3" pipe really sings at full throttle. It's not that loud at idle at 750RPM. I was playing around the other day and got a good bark out of 4th gear at 65+ mph. I don't think I have $500 in the whole system. But I bought it 10+ years ago.

My buddy Greg used to have hornies on his '56 Belair with a 327 and a 3-speed. Sounded awesome! On acceleration and deceleration. :metal:


Anyhow, nothing like what Mr. Douglas is looking for. I'm very happy with what I am running now... a set of Cherry bombs exiting out of the rear through Bellflower tips. It's exactly the sound I was looking for since I changed the look of the truck. It's actually very quiet inside the cab going down the road at any speed. When you open it up, it raps really nice. With the 40 series Flowmasters I had before, you couldn't even talk to the passenger at cruise speed... :chevy:

Has anyone mentioned placement of the mufflers too

I would think that if the muffler is placed further back and under the bed the resonance would be a lot less if any in the cab.

I just put Speedway's Tru-Rams and Brockman (steel packed) Mellowtones on my freshly rebuilt 327. Awesome 60's muscle car sound. I went with 24" 2-1/2" inlet/outlet. They are a little too loud so I'm replacing them with 36" Mellowtones. Below is a link to a utube vid of last weekends startup. My 10 year old son shot the video, so it's a bit jerky.
