Yes if your truck is 2wd you will have to change it to a 4wd cross member. You don't have to pull the engine, but I can tell you it will be 100x easier to just pull it and get it out of the way. I'm sure you could do it with it jacked up with a cherry picker still hooked to the tranny, but it won't be fun. And the crossmember isn't welded in place, it has rivets that hold it in. You either torch them out, or use a chisel, air chisel, grinder, or cut off wheel to cut the head off. Then you use a punch and knock them out.

No need the motor mounts will keep it from dropping too far. Just suport the tranny with a floor jack

The motor mount brackets are bolted to the cross member so that is a problem. You have to unbolt the motor mount brackets to get the crossmember out.

Re: crossmember info

No matter how you get it out, a 4wd crossmember won't bolt in. I tried 2 different ones and neither would go in without trimming. I'm gonna use the stock 2wd mounts and have a crossmember fabbed up after I get the motor ready to go in. I have a tall deck with the huge oil pan, so need to have the motor to get it to fit.
