Steering is responsive but does not pull back...
Hello All,
I have a 1972 Chevy Pickup, Long Bed that I put a 1/2 ton rear axle in. I have a really insteresting steering problem. The steering is 100% accurate. If I move the steering wheel even a little the wheels move. Problem: whenever I make a turn the steering wheel does not pull back. In fact I have to manual turn the steering wheel back to center after any turn. Also the steering is really really easy, I could steer this car with my pinky, it feels like there is no tension in the steer at all yet it is perfectly accurate to how the wheels move. I have had the car aligned and it is correct. Just tonight I notice my steering gear box has a slight leak in the top where the steering wheel column goes into the steering gear box. Could this problem be my steering gear box, just from a little leak? Anyone have any ideas? :( |
Re: Steering is responsive but does not pull back...
It sounds like someone adjusted the slack in the sreering box to tight. There is an allen bolt in the top of the box with a lock nut on it. Loosen the nut and adjust the screw for more free play in the wheel. It doesn't take much to make a difference.

^ Beat me to it, that's exactly what it sounds like.

Did you have any front end work done? Sounds like the drag link is on backwards!
